Book Description

September 1998
When the elements are against you, there's no place to hide.

You're sailing along smoothly, the salt air in your lungs, the spray on your face, when suddenly the sea becomes an unfriendly host and you are at its mercy.

From the pages of Motor Boating & Sailing magazine comes an enthralling anthology of twenty-four true sea stories that will set your pulse racing. Collected for the first time are some of the acclaimed magazine's most riveting tales of danger and daring on the high seas, all told by the men and women who lived to recount their adventures.

"Heroes"-The Coast Guard embarks on a daring mission to rescue three sailors caught in the legendary gale that inspired The Perfect Storm.

"Staying Alive"-A pod of killer whales turns deadly and sinks a couple's sailboat, leaving them stranded on alife raft in the middle of the Pacific for sixty-six days.

"Fastnet Disaster"-Media mogul Ted Turner recalls the harrowing race that destroyed men and ships and nearly cost him his own life.

"Tania's Triumph"-Tania Aebi, a gutsy eighteen year old from New York, circles the globe on a sailboat built for one.

An edge-of-your-seat collection of triumph and tragedy, Against The Sea calls to the intrepid seafarer in all of us.

2.0 out of 5 stars Short 5-7 page stories of adventures at sea., September 29, 1998

This book is a quick read. It consists of many short stories of adventures at sea. Some are pretty good, some are not. If you like sea stories ( I do ) you'll find this book lacking. My son, who is not an avid reader, liked the shortness of each story and eventually read the whole book. If you like to read in short spurts, you'll like this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Summary of the book: Against The Sea, February 20, 2004
By
This review is from: Against the Sea: Great Adventure Stories from the Pages of Motorboating & Sailing (Paperback)
Reading just a couple of pages and already I start to feel myself hanging on to every word the author places onto the canvas, a clear picture is being painted word for word. The writing is very descriptive and really takes me for a ride that captures my attention and keeps it. When I read a book, short story, article or the ticker endlessly scrolling on the bottom of a 24 hour news show, I want to be either told quickly what is going on or I want my attention to be grabbed so strongly that I can't put the pages down until the end. This book does just that, the authors descriptive writing style lets the words flow as I'm taken right into the story and right into the action. The ingredients that most appeal to me in this book are the descriptive writing style of the author, the powerful story line and of course stories about man against Mother Nature.

When reading this book I think about how the authors use of descriptive words and the flow of the writing and I think to myself how great it would be if someday I could have the same effect with a touch of my own style. I would like to make the picture come alive with fewer words and effort.

Thank You Linda for sharing this book with me.
