Book Description

May 29, 2012 Raines of Wind Canyon
Millions of lives are on the line. But for him, only one truly matters.

It's not in bodyguard Jake Cantrell's job description to share his suspicions with his assignments. Beautiful executive Sage Dumont may be in charge, but Jake's not on her payroll. As a former special forces marine, Jake trusts his gut, and it's telling him there's something off about a shipment arriving at Marine Drilling International. His instinct is aroused...in more ways than one.

A savvy businesswoman, Sage knows better than to take some hired gun's "hunch" as gospel. And yet she is learning not to underestimate the man her grandfather hired to protect her. Determined to prove Jake wrong, Sage does some digging of her own and turns up deadly details she was never meant to see.

Drawn into a terrifying web of lies and deceit-and into feelings they can't afford to explore-what Jake and Sage uncover may be frighteningly worse than they ever imagined.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"With the first novel of her new Raines of Wind Canyon trilogy, Martin brings us a rugged hero, a strong-willed heroine, and a story filled with romance, grit, tension and suspense set in the Wyoming mountains. Martin definitely delivers."-Romantic Times on Against the Wind

"After reading the first book about the Raines brothers, I knew Kat Martin would have to do something pretty amazing to make her second book as much of a joy to read. As soon as I opened the book, I realized that she has succeeded. The second book is as amazing as the first. Ms. Martin continues to draw her readers into the stories of these three wonderful brothers...."-Suspense Romance Writers on Against the Fire, 10/10

"Once you start Against the Law, be prepared not to stop until you've reached the end. With its nonstop action, nail biting episodes mixed with some sizzling love scenes, this is one I highly recommend."--Romance Reviews Today

"Kat Martin is one of the best authors around! She has an incredible gift for writing."

-Literary Times

"Martin dishes up sizzling passion and true love, then serves it up with savoir faire."

-Los Angeles Daily News

"4½ quills! Ms. Martin has struck the mother load in her AGAINST series. Against the Law is her third installment in the series and by far the most powerfully intense romantic suspense with its charismatic characters, a story line that defies gravity with enough endorphins and adrenaline driven that even the Die Hard series can't hold a candle to this brilliantly written series. Ms. Martin is a true mistress of the written word that never disappoints her readers."-Romantic Crush Junkies

"As you might suspect from any Kat Martin book, this is gloriously suspenseful, magnificent reading and filled with hot and wonderful passion. Martin is superb!"-Romance Reviews Magazine on Against the Storm

"Truly a gifted author, I've never read a book by Kat Martin that wasn't immediately headed for my keeper shelf. Historical or contemporary, she's a must read for me. With Against the Storm she proves once again why I keep coming back for more."-Joyfully Reviewed on Against the Storm

"Fans of Martin's Raines of Wind Canyon trilogy are going to love meeting more of his testosterone-and-honor-laden family...the romantic suspense is tautly compelling and the psychological terror ratchets up with each red herring. Readers aren't going to be able to put the light out until the last page." -RT Book Reviews on Against the Storm

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad May 30, 2012
By JM
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Most of the books in Kat Martin's "Raines" series are a decent read. This one is anything but. The characters are 1-dimensional, the dialogue trite, the plot contrived. The writing in general is awkward, so much so that it's hard to believe this is by the same author. There are some rather astoundingly stupid scenarios as well - for example the main characters cover up an international drug smuggling incident and help the bad guys (really truly nasty characters with no redeeming qualities) get out of the country in order to protect their own business deal. That the author justifies this truly greedy, self-centered, criminal activity as acceptable, even heroic, behavior is unbelievable. The female protagonist suffers from that typical "bad writing" paradox, i.e., the writer tells us she's a strong, intelligent, successful woman, but nearly everything she says and does shows her to be indecisive, insecure, and not especially clever. The male protagonist is hardly human; he's perfect in looks, build, brains, behavior (other than the fact that he's aiding and abetting criminals), and naturally is the best lover in the world, or at least in Texas. That's what we're told anyway, but there's actually very little demonstration. Don't waste your money on this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read June 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Sage Dumont needs to win a contract for used drilling equipment to ensure her promotion. Somebody wants her to fail, and it's bodyguard Jake Cantrell's job to see that nothing goes wrong. But when Jake and Sage stumble upon a plot more deadly than they can imagine, the ante is upped and they must combine forces just to survive.

Jake Cantrell is good at his job. Private investigator and mercenary, the tough ex-special forces marine has been hired as a bodyguard by Sage Dupont's grandfather. Sage, an upcoming VP, wants to earn her promotion to president and feels clinching a deal between the Saudis for purchase of used pipe and platform drilling equipment is her key to success. When Jake arrives at the marine Drilling International offices, they get off on a bad start. Sage doesn't think she needs a bodyguard, but her grandfather feels differently. Furthermore, Cantrell's uncanny intuition for suspecting shady dealing is aroused, and he's going to see that Sage is protected.

Initially, Sage must entertain the Saudi sheik's family and entourage, then negotiate the deal. On the surface things appear to be going well between Sage and the Saudis, but when Jake overhears disturbing news, he fears much more than a transaction for used pipe is in the works. Moreover, he's attracted to Sage and doesn't want to compromise her or his position to protect her.

Tension sizzles in this contemporary story. As usual, Ms. Martin has come up with a plot that offers nonstop suspense mixed with the usual high-octane testosterone so prevalent in her books. Both Jake and Sage are nicely drawn, three-dimensional characters a reader can care about. The fast-paced plot is not only fascinating but provides lots of information about Middle Easterners and their customs. I was fascinated.

Secondary characters were great. I became so interested in the hunky PI's at Trace Rawlins' company. I can't wait to read their stories.

Against the Sun has wonderful characters, great pacing and nonstop suspense. And if you like a sexy hero, then Jake Cantrell will satisfy your every craving.

Against the Sun by Kat Martin
Contemporary Romance - May 29th, 2012
4 stars

Against the Sun is part of Kat Martin's fabulously popular Raines of the Wind Canyon series. Strong men with a heart of gold characterize this wonderful series.

Jake Cantrell is a security expert who is feeling a bit bored when he is assigned as a bodyguard to the luscious if strong willed heiress Sage Dumont by her powerful grandfather. But this is strictly job is business and besides, Sage has a fiancée. Sage is impetuous, independent and ambitious. Although Jake knows it is wrong, their mutual attraction flares hotter with every encounter. And when Sage calls her engagement all bets are off! But complications arise when the Middle Eastern sheik that Sage is to conduct a business deal with brings his family to the United States. Ones that involve: drugs, explosion and murderous threats. Can Jake protect Sage and win her love?

This books starts out deceptively simple. But I was surprised at how complex the plot evolved and how much I enjoyed the fiery interplay between Jake and Sage. It was also interesting to see how Sage must adapt to working with a different culture and the ramifications of the often clashing ideals. Sage's character transformed as she starts out self-assured but then must question what she really wants in life, including Jake! I liked how Jake shook things up for Sage and the sexual tension between them really had me hot under the collar! When Sage realized that she was living a `half' life that did not challenge her, I found myself sympathizing with her. The subplots surrounding the sheik and Sage's feisty, red-headed best friend, Rina, made this a fun and compelling book to read. I hope Kate Martin will write a book that stars Rina as her next heroine because she is one spunky character that will give the right man the run for his money!

Immersing, well written suspense with passionate characters that are easy to love.

nothing but tight groins on every page. It gets tiresome and distracts from what little bit of story line there is.
