Book Description

November 1, 2000
The media thrives on stories of children at risk, and conventional wisdom relegates such children to failure. Challenging these characterizations, the authors show how 12 traumatized children developed into productive, caring, and responsible adults.

additional pre-publication puff quote:

In the practice of medicine, a study of a single case history often contributes the most powerful and useful insights into difficult clinical problems. Dr. Sol Levine, in Against Terrible Odds: Lessons in Resilience from Our Children, describes the personal stories of ten children and adolescents who discover their own humanity and individuality despite early childhood experiences that were physically and emotionally devastating. Understanding the path that leads to resilience---"the ability to rebound from loss and discouragement"---is the theme of each personal story. As a pediatrician, I found these case studies both life-affirming and extraordinarily useful guides in my work among children and adolescents with developmental, physical and psychological disabilities.

This review is from: Against Terrible Odds: Lessons in Resilience from Our Children (Paperback)
This book is inspirational! The stories of how some children have overcome devastating circumstances are very well written and moving. The commentary offers insightful analysis, providing a good balance of dramatic stories and intelligent critique. I highly recommend this book for the general public, as well as mental health and youth workers. In these uncertain times, I found these stories particularly salient.
