Seger released this album when I was a junior in high school. I didn't listen to it much then; not enough head-banging for my tastes at the time. Being older and wiser these days, I love this album. "Against the Wind" is I think the second best song Seger has ever written. "Like a Rock" was my favorite but once he sold out to Chevy it's much harder to listen too. "Shinin' Brightly," and "You'll Accomp'ny Me" are also just outstanding. One thing you have to say about Bob Seger: he writes and performs his music honestly and with passion. If you're looking for canned, over-produced music, this awesome album is not for you.

This album was the high water mark of Seger's career, though many of us didn't realize it. "Against The Wind" was the third of a four album run that permanently established Seger as major force in rock music.
For a while, Seger towered over everyone in rock music, including Bruce Springsteen, but less product, albums and tours, allowed Seger's star to fade leading to an almost has-been perception by the early 1990s.
This album is a brilliant showcase of Seger's talent and a sad reminder of what could have been, if not for missed opporunities.
It is one of the strongest records ever made. There are no "bad" songs and several classic hits. In many ways, it is Seger's third Greatest Hits album.

Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band changed their sound a bit for the release of 1980's Against The Wind. While the album included songs like the great "Her Strut", "Horizontal Bop" and "Betty Lou's Getting Out Tonight" which are rockers in the classic Seger vein, much of the album takes on a country tone. Having co-written The Eagles' number one hit "Heartache Tonight" which has a country rock flavor, Mr. Seger follows that course on the album. The title track is a lamenting song that has a somber tone while "You'll Accomp'ny Me" is a pretty and longing. The best song on the album is the powerful and foreboding "Fire Lake" which Eagles Don Henley & Glenn Frey return the favor by lending back up vocals. Against The Wind become Mr. Seger's one and only number one album and spent six weeks at the top.

This is perhaps the only cd that I have ever bought that was worth the money. I dished out the cash, primarily for "Her Strut," and over a year later, it still sits in my cd player. I'm 18 and am flooded with today's garbage---and there is still nothing like good ol' Seger. This cd is definitely worth the money and the music's great!

Detroit singer/songwriter/rocker Bob Seger released his twelfth album Against in February of 1980.
By 1980, Bob had three straight Multi Platinum selling classic albums out of Live Bullet, Night Moves and 1978's Stranger in Town. Then, as Bob finished the Stranger in Town Tour, he and The Silver Bullet Band (which featured bass player Chris Campbell, sax player Alto Reed, and would be the last studio album with drummer David Teegarden and also the last to fully feature guitarist Drew Abbott) (tracks 1, 2, 3, 6 and 8) plus help by The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (drummer Roger Hawkins, guitarists Jimmy Johnson and Pete Carr, bass player David Hood and the late keyboard player Barry Beckett) (tracks 4, 5, 7, 9 and 10) and numerous female backing singers (on many of the tracks) to record his most successful album. All of the tracks were written by Bob Seger.
We begin with the stellar rocker "The Horizontal Bop" which featured Bob on lead guitar and sharing the lead solos at the end with Drew Abbott (who does the guitar solo in the middle after Alto Reed's barn burning tenor sax solo) plus the legendary Dr John on piano. Next was the Top 20 single "You'll Ac'compny Me" which features Little Feat keyboard player Bill Payne on keyboards. This song is a great song. Next is the ode to Jane Fonda, the rocking rock radio staple "Her Strut" which just rocks and just features Bob, Chris Campbell and David Teegarden (Bob does a killer guitar solo). Next is the mid-tempo number "No Man's Land" which is a great song (Bob again on lead guitar). The first half ends with the rocker "Long Twin Silver Line" which just rocks and has Muscle Shoals playing a hard rocker with some tasty lead by Pete Carr. The song makes you feel like you are on a train going at 300 MPH!

From the beginning with "Horizontal Bop" to the closing with "Shining Brightly," Seger exceeds "Night Moves in quantity and quality. He got more radio play off of this CD, and from more stations. "Her Strut" is one of my favorite Seger songs. And "Fire Lake, Betty Lou, Accompany Me," and "Against The Wind" are all fabulous Seger classics, lyricallly and musically. I know there's lots of folks who say there wasn't much breadth to Seger's musical ability. But once you take Seger for what he's worth, judge him by his era, his contemporaries and what it is exactly he does best, it's hard to find any future or previous CDs by him that measure up to this one. Of course, there's also the immeasurable "nostalgia" that many have for this CD, not to mention the buiit in nostalgia Seger puts into most of his music and storytelling. I think it will stand the test of time.
