5.0 out of 5 stars Why isn't Davis Gaines a Superstar?
Davis Gaines is NOT a household name! But he should be!! This is one of the greatest voices to ever grace the Broadway Stage, plus he's got the looks and the personality to back it up!! I will never forget the first time I ever heard him sing...Phantom of the Opera at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. That big booming baritone voice filled the entire theatre...it just...

1.0 out of 5 stars Against the Tide
I bought this CD last year because I heard his wonderful voice singing Song on the Sand in the tribute to Jerry Miller on TV. I cannot reconcile this CD with his voice on the Jerry Miller tribute. It is like listening to two different persons and the picture on the CD doesn't even look like the one on the above-mentioned program. I played it twice and will never...

That big booming baritone voice filled the entire theatre...it just took your breath away! (Davis Gaines was the longest running, and many consider the greatest, Phantom of them all.) And, Against the Tide, his first CD does not let you down. Just sit back, get comfortable and let this beautiful voice take you to places you've never been before. For instance, his version of "Music of the Night" while different than the arrangement used in "Phantom" is fresh and sad and uplifting all at once. I loved it! And, "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now/Tennessee Waltz" is just delightful. Who'd have ever thought these two classic songs could have been interwoven in such a fashion? But, my favorite...the one that will bring tears to your eyes from the sheer beauty of Davis Gaines' voice is "Ol Man River"...it is in a word UNBELIEVABLE!! This man is a treasure, a talent with a voice that only God can give...Get this CD and share the pleasure that fortunate fans of Davis Gaines have been enjoying for years. You'll be happy that you did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Sound, June 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Against the Tide (Audio CD)
This CD is moving and tender at times and upbeat at other times. What a range and skill this CD has. Tea for two never sounded this good before! I wanted to float down the river when I listened to Old Man River, but you cannot beat the power and excellence of Music of the Night. This CD does not even begin to capture the glory of listening to Davis Gaines in person but it gets you as close as it can. I recommend it highly, this is a CD and a performer worth checking out over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anyone can whistle, but, January 31, 2000

very few people can sing like Davis Gaines, and that is what makes this album so GREAT. If everyone could sing like this man, people would not need to buy CDs. The range of Davis Gaines's voice is truly amazing. I find his rendition of Music of the Night, far superior to Michael Crawford's, no wonder he is the actor who has played the part more than any other actor. The true highlight on this album, though, was Ol' Man River. It gave me goosebumps, something that very few singers or songs are able to do. The only other song that I can recall has done that to me was Nessun Dorma, from the 3 Tenors 1st concert CD. I cannot wait to get my hands on the new CD when it is available. Davis Gaines should go down as one of the truly great stars of the American stage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous - Powerful and Moving!, May 10, 1999

If this music doesn't have an impact on your mood, nothing will! I have seen Davis on stave 3 times in the past year, each time in a different type of performance - once as the Phantom, once with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, and this past weekend in an intimate "cabaret" type setting. Each time I fell in love with his music all over again! Davis Gaines is a "total" performer, and his vocal talents are outstanding! Anyone who enjoys listening to his music should not be without this CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Vocalist!, September 28, 2001
This review is from: Against the Tide (Audio CD)
Davis Gaines demonstrates an immense vocal power, as well as an astonishing delicacy, on this album. Known for his Broadway roles, this talented performer proves here to be a successful solo recording artist. An eclectic mix of songs styles, from Broadway to pop ballads, make this a wildly diverse and amazingly satisfying listen. This CD demonstrates that Gaines is a great singer and we need to hear more from him.

5.0 out of 5 stars A voice of exceptional power, range, and sensitivity, April 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Against the Tide (Audio CD)
This is a stunning debut album from one of the finest talents in musical theatre today. Mr. Gaines' voice soars through a wide variety of songs, from standards to recent material. His phrasing is impeccable (especially on Sondheim's poignant "Anyone Can Whistle") and his vocal rangeis phenomenal. He is currently working on analbum of Sammy Cahn songs. I'll certainly put onmy "High Button Shoes" to go "All the Way" forthat one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely gorgeous, March 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Against the Tide (Audio CD)
Unfortunately, I missed Davis Gaines in the San Francisco performance of the Phantom of the Opera and so when I got this CD, I really didn't know what I was buying. But, a friend of mine gave me his highest recommendation of this CD so I took a chance. I'm sure glad I did. Mr Gaines' voice is something else--at times, smooth, gentle and irresistably sweet. At other times, it's a powerhouse, like on "This Nearly was Mine" and "Ole Man River." The CD is an interesting compilation of styles which really allows Mr Gaines to utilize his considerable vocal skills. I hope it's not too long before he comes out with more material!

5.0 out of 5 stars A CD FOR ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN PASSIONATE IN THEIR LIFE!!!!, October 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Against the Tide (Audio CD)
An unbelievable CD! Davis has unbelievable charm that is conveyed throughout all of his songs....From Sondhiem to Lloyd Webber and beyond Gaines performs with a sense of perfection that very few artists achieve when they release a compilation album, yet Davis has done it and with such ease. Best-known for "The Music of The Night" he does not dissapoint and humanizes himself for anyone who doubts that he can do anything but the Phantom with "I'll Love You Back to Life." A must get!

5.0 out of 5 stars A NEARLY PERFECT RECORDING, March 18, 2000
By
Mark Chancey (Saugatuck, MI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Against the Tide (Audio CD)
Davis Gaines is one of the finest male voices in American musical theatre today. "Against the Tide" offers a selection of songs that showcase his talents very well. Another plus is the general resistance to including show tunes that are recorded and recorded ad nauseum. (The Music of the Night excepted) How refreshing to hear a male version of "Someone Else's Story", the melancholy "Rainbow Sleeve" and the stirring title song "Against the Tide". Please...give us more recordings like this.
