I read the manuscript of Wyman's book prior to publishing. From the moment his mother walked away from the nursing home he had me hooked. How many elderly women escape from the long arm of the system, flee to Colorado and regain their health? Wyman's book is an honest recounting of his battle against a corrupt system that holds all the power over our lives. If you have parents that are growing old and have a chance of running up against the laws of our country or if you fit that description, you should read this book. Either that, or they'll lock you in a nursing home, find a suitable cocktail of drugs so you'll be quiet, seize your home, take your money and let you die. Given those choices, I'd read the book.

John Howard Wyman's book is an incredible account, of all the atrocities, that can happen to any one of our parents. He shows a very vivid and imaginative view of his and his mothers life happenings. It has shown to be very helpful, to me, as I am going back east to help my sisters take care of my 92 year old dad and 84 year old mother. We refuse to put them into an elderly care facility, and take care of them in thier home. This is what should have happened with John's mom but without the help of her husband and others in her family, she was "put away" out of sight and out of touch from the people that cared the most for her. Please read and comment on your views of this amazing book!!

I have just finished reading "Against Her Will"! I couldn't put it down. Having lost my mom 2 years ago to a long battle with Alzheimer's and her living in a wonderful home in Oregon, I found it disturbing to read that some of John's family would actually have their mom placed in such a facility. If you don't have Alzheimer's it is awful for a patient to be placed in an Enhanced Care Facility. (One that specializes in Alzheimer's care.) It is not a place for anyone who doesn't have the symptoms or diagnosis. I see John, his mother and their caregiver in church most Sundays. Carol loves being there. She is focused, sings, follows the prayers, takes communion and adds change or dollars during the offertory. She looks beautiful and radiant. John has been taking great care of her. If we could all have someone love us that much as we age.
Bravo! A must read for anyone with aging parents and/or loved ones.

As I began this book I was skeptical. I am a nurse and at times have been brow beaten for the shortcomings of my profession. I take it in stride because I know that there is good reason to question the "system". I have been there myself on a personal level.
That being said I found "Against Her Will - A Cautionary Tale" to be poignant , heartfelt and very eye opening. I don't believe that anyone is the perfect caregiver. It is very difficult to find the appropriate facilities and/or be a caregiver. Especially with no experience or skills for those who are brave enough to try. I commend John for caring for his mom, and doing the very best that he can for her. I am sure that his mom feels safer now , and is much happier. Thank you John, for putting the ugliness out there for us to see. Things are changing much too slowly and maybe this will help speed things up a bit to expose those who are taking advantage.

I just finished reading AGAINST HER Will by John Howard Wyman. Once I opened the book I could not put it down. Despite Mr. Wyman's abusive childhood he never walked away from his family. He grew up to be a loving, compassionate and productive member of society. I can relate well to everything John went through with our corrupt judicial system. My Mom was kidnapped from her own home on August 22, 2011 by her "law" guardian, Mary Giordano, of Franchina and Giordano in Garden City, NY. She was told by Mary that she had to go to the emergency room for a health issue. Instead, Mary Giordano took her to a nursing home far from her family and friends and locked her up against her will!! See SAVE Dorothy Wilson Legally Kidnapped on facebook. I was able, willing, and ready to care for her in my home. I filed an order to show cause, called and wrote letters to senators, congressmen, and the NYS Judicial Commission. Twelve days before Mom was going to be released to my care, she passed away, alone and frightened, abandoned by the very systems in place to protect her. Why??? Money, power, greed. Wake up people! These lawyers and judges just want your parents house and social security and any assets left, no matter how small. As John warns us in his book, the time to rise up against this abuse is NOW!! We are all next. These corrupt lawyers and judges are greedy, egotistical and power hungry. They are completely lacking in any compassion for the elderly and will conserve everyone and anyone they can just to fatten their bank accounts. The laws that are in place are completely ignored by these people and if you dare to bring it to their attention you are immediately pegged as a troublemaker. Write to your congressman, join NASGA, let these people know you are watching. The time to do something is now.....!

The tale describes in depth the frustrating uphill battles encountered in fighting multiple systems for the sake of the health, well being and dignity of an elderly parent. This describes a very real maze of cultural systems riddled with injustices working against the humane treatment of the weakest amongst us. This book illustrates the importance of bringing these issues to light for the sake of our parents, ourselves, our children and the future of society. Against Her Will
