5.0 out of 5 stars Twenty years after the fact
Seger released this album when I was a junior in high school. I didn't listen to it much then; not enough head-banging for my tastes at the time. Being older and wiser these days, I love this album. "Against the Wind" is I think the second best song Seger has ever written. "Like a Rock" was my favorite but once he sold out to Chevy it's much harder...

3.0 out of 5 stars Bob Seger - The Hit Machine
I have mixed feelings on this one. Like "Stranger In Town", "Wind" does not quite live up to some of the albums that came before it. Seger had become a hit machine by 1980 and some of these songs almost feel a bit dumbed down in order to possibly appeal to a wider audience. "Horizontal Bop", and "Her Strut" are two examples. I guess they are fun songs, but we know by...

Seger released this album when I was a junior in high school. I didn't listen to it much then; not enough head-banging for my tastes at the time. Being older and wiser these days, I love this album. "Against the Wind" is I think the second best song Seger has ever written. "Like a Rock" was my favorite but once he sold out to Chevy it's much harder to listen too. "Shinin' Brightly," and "You'll Accomp'ny Me" are also just outstanding. One thing you have to say about Bob Seger: he writes and performs his music honestly and with passion. If you're looking for canned, over-produced music, this awesome album is not for you.

This album was the high water mark of Seger's career, though many of us didn't realize it. "Against The Wind" was the third of a four album run that permanently established Seger as major force in rock music.

For a while, Seger towered over everyone in rock music, including Bruce Springsteen, but less product, albums and tours, allowed Seger's star to fade leading to an almost has-been perception by the early 1990s.

This album is a brilliant showcase of Seger's talent and a sad reminder of what could have been, if not for missed opporunities.

It is one of the strongest records ever made. There are no "bad" songs and several classic hits. In many ways, it is Seger's third Greatest Hits album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Seger Struts, July 20, 2001
This review is from: Against the Wind (Audio CD)
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band changed their sound a bit for the release of 1980's Against The Wind. While the album included songs like the great "Her Strut", "Horizontal Bop" and "Betty Lou's Getting Out Tonight" which are rockers in the classic Seger vein, much of the album takes on a country tone. Having co-written The Eagles' number one hit "Heartache Tonight" which has a country rock flavor, Mr. Seger follows that course on the album. The title track is a lamenting song that has a somber tone while "You'll Accomp'ny Me" is a pretty and longing. The best song on the album is the powerful and foreboding "Fire Lake" which Eagles Don Henley & Glenn Frey return the favor by lending back up vocals. Against The Wind become Mr. Seger's one and only number one album and spent six weeks at the top.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only one worth the money, April 23, 2004

This review is from: Against the Wind (Audio CD)
This is perhaps the only cd that I have ever bought that was worth the money. I dished out the cash, primarily for "Her Strut," and over a year later, it still sits in my cd player. I'm 18 and am flooded with today's garbage---and there is still nothing like good ol' Seger. This cd is definitely worth the money and the music's great!

5.0 out of 5 stars An album that will stand against the wind, October 13, 2000

This is the album that has my favorite Bob Seger song of all time, "Against The Wind." All the other songs are also good, especially "Fire Lake," "No Man's Land," and "Long Twin Silver Line." Some of the songs are fast beat hard rockers, and others are slow, catchy, and meaningful. This album isn't jammed full of hits like some of Bob Seger's other albums are, but it's still a good one.

Bob Seger was one of the great artists from the 70's and 80's, and if you like that era of rock, I recommend getting "Against The Wind" or any of Bob Seger's other albums, you shouldn't be disappointed with them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Rock, September 12, 2003

This album was always my favourite Seger album. Includes hits such as 'Against The Wind', 'Fire Lake' and another that should have been a huge hit "Betty Lou's Gettin Out Tonight'. For some unknown reason, 'Fire Lake' wasn't included in his greatest hits collection. Great sax on several selections and vocal backups by the likes of Don Henley and Glen Frey. This remastered version has none of the flat sound of the origional nor are the highs ultra sharp. Great remastering job on a really wonderful disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Against The Wind, May 30, 2003
This review is from: Against the Wind (Audio CD)
The song 'Against The Wind' is my second favorite song of all time, sometimes my very favorite, in my more reflective moments. Almost all of Bob's stuff is great, but this one speaks for me much more than anything else he's done. 'Fire Lake' is also incredible, as is 'You'll Accomp'ny Me'. My mother got me into Seger when I was very young, she'd be playing it as we'd make out trips into the mountains, etc. Her favorite song of all is on her too: 'No Man's Land'. So it's an album shared by me, my brother and mother, and one I've listened to and loved for literally as long as I can remember. And while subconsiously I think stuff like Stranger In Town has better rockers than this album, things like that, with Against The Wind, it's an emotional favorite as opposed to a logical best, which would be somthing like Night Moves, Stranger In Town, or The Distance. But this one remains close to me. Great memories. Thanks, mom, thanks Bob.

4.0 out of 5 stars AGAINST THE WIND... EVERYMAN'S STORY (including my own), September 21, 2007
By
ol' nuff n' den sum (the Virginia coast, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Against the Wind (Audio CD)
Musically, Bob Seger And The Silver Bullet Band's Against the Wind (1980) has a little bit of everything for everyone. Old-time rock n' roll with Horizontal Bop and Betty Lou, straight ahead rock with Her Strut, love songs with Accompany Me and Good for Me, and country-rock with Fire Lake.

The centerpiece of this solid Bob Seger And The Silver Bullet Band album is the title song, Against The Wind. What a song! If there is a Songwriting 101 course somewhere, this has got to be it's example of how to craft the perfect song. It tells an interesting and timeless story, it reveals the wisdom of experience, and it's relevant to people's lives. Actually, the song perfectly describes my own life, from the youthful exuberance and indescretion of the past right up to the deadlines and commitments of today. The music fits the mood of the lyric, and Bob turns in a motivated and soulful vocal performance (as always).

Another classic here is the funky and electrifying Her Strut. Seger sings it like he means it, and even breaks out his electric guitar and plays a pretty mean solo.

Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Timothy B. Schmidt of The Eagles make an appearance to sing backing vocals on Fire Lake, which is also a Seger classic. With lyrics like "Who's gonna ride that chrome three-wheeler" and "Who's gonna play those eights and aces", the song sounds like it could have come from an early Bruce Springsteen album, and it works well here.

Against The Wind isn't quite in the classic category of Bob Seger's Night Moves or Live Bullet, but it's a solid and enjoyable album, and of course, it's got THAT SONG.

4.0 out of 5 stars Against The Wind is a welcome sound for the Eighties, February 10, 2006

This review is from: Against the Wind (Audio CD)
Having been a Bob Seger fan since the early seventies this album is in true form.Acompany Me has been my favorite, even more so then Old time Rock and Roll.Maybe I can still see Tom Cruise dancing on the couch in his underwear or maybe I just got tired of it.Anyway with songs like Against the Wind and Fire Lake are great. The one song that in my opinion is weak is Horizontal Bop. The first time I played this album I thought oh no the whole album is going to be like this......Nah.Whats nice now a days i can skip this track ......26 years later i'm still skipping.OVERALL: This is a great album its just Horizontal Bop is out of place.

4.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Seger CD. His zenith has you boppin., July 31, 2006
This review is from: Against the Wind (Audio CD)
From the beginning with "Horizontal Bop" to the closing with "Shining Brightly," Seger exceeds "Night Moves in quantity and quality. He got more radio play off of this CD, and from more stations. "Her Strut" is one of my favorite Seger songs. And "Fire Lake, Betty Lou, Accompany Me," and "Against The Wind" are all fabulous Seger classics, lyricallly and musically. I know there's lots of folks who say there wasn't much breadth to Seger's musical ability. But once you take Seger for what he's worth, judge him by his era, his contemporaries and what it is exactly he does best, it's hard to find any future or previous CDs by him that measure up to this one. Of course, there's also the immeasurable "nostalgia" that many have for this CD, not to mention the buiit in nostalgia Seger puts into most of his music and storytelling. I think it will stand the test of time.
