Product Description

A swirl of pop-art color, madcap magic, and the bittersweet call of life and love suddenly take the mature, ravishing, self-reliant Agata by storm. When Agata, the popular bookshop proprietor and dispenser of sunny wisdom in the form of books, is suddenly wooed by a man almost half her age, her electricity hits high-voltage. It even sends light bulbs bursting in her wake. Yet it is Agata's joy and 'explosive' magnetism in the face of life in all its irony that eventually offers the eye of the cyclone. There, all is supremely quiet and still, as Agata creates a haven of love and freedom to quell the storms of life's unfulfilled desires.

This DVD includes a complementary short film, Director's Statement and Bio, among other bonus features.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE! I rented it originally, and decided I wanted to
own it, so I can watch it anytime. If you enjoyed "Pane e Tulipani"
(Bread and Tulips) , you will love this romantic movie! It is funny,
sweet, and wonderful. Agata owns a book shop, and this story follows
her labyrinthine path to love, as well as exploring the story of her
brother on a quest to find his biological family. Highly recommended!

I loved Lucia's earlier Bread and Tulips which is on my all time top 10 movies. I found Agata and the Storm entertaining with an intriguing plot. What I did find interesting and surprising was the almost all the characters were the same actors as Bread and Tulips, for example: Agata was Rosalba in B&T, the chubby detective in B&T was the clothing sales guy, and the actress playing his mother also played his mother in B&T. The Masseuse next door in B&T played Agata's brother's wife, and the hotel clerk in B&T played the bookstore clerk. So it was like visiting a group of old friends in a different environment. I didn't give this movie 5 stars as I did B&T, instead I gave it 4. Mostly because it was a nice romantic comedy with a little tragedy (which, in my opinion, did not add any value to the plot), had a happy ending, but it did not move me as Bread and Tulips did.

About a middled aged book store owner Agata who falls for a younger man,
her brother finds out a strange thing in the middle that changes all their lives. In spite of death there is comedy like light bulbs blowing out.
By American standards it is somewhat racy, but it is a good hearted
romance.

I recently was browsing the foreign movie section of my local library and fell upon this early release from the Film Movement catalog of foreign and indie movies. I immediately snapped it up as I outright love Film Movement.

"Agata and the Storm (2004 release from Italy; 118 min.) brings a multi-character ensemble movie about Agata, a bookshop owner in her mid-to-late 40s, who somehow attracts the attention and eventually the love interest of a younger man, "13 years younger" (comments Agata), to be exact. Meanwhile Agata's brother Gustavo learns that he was adopted at a young age, and hence he's not Agata's "real" brother. There are plenty of other subplots too many to describe here. Will Agata find true love with her younger man? Does Gustavo come to terms with his new family situation? To tell you more of the plot would ruin your viewing experience and you'll just have to see for youself how these questions, and other subplots, will play out.

I love foreign movies as much as much about anyone you'll ever find, but I could not really get into this movie for whatever reason. The characters didn't resonate with me, and hence I had no emotional involvement or investment in this movie, despite all the talking and talking and talking. I kept thinking, hope against hope, that it would eventually get better but in the end it just didn't. This is only the second time in seeing dozens and dozens of Film Movement releases that I was disappointed. Maybe it was just me, I don't know.

I'd never heard of this film when I rented it so it was all a surprise. At first I didn't know who the characters were or their relationships. But that was part of the plot.....a sweet, rather hapless architect discovers that he's not who he thought he was and that send him on an entirely new course in life. It includes people he probably would never have rubbed shoulders with in his "former" life. Also, new activities, like bowling and a big white hen!

It's a fun, warm-hearted, charming and very colorful film, guaranteed to perk anyone up on a dreary day. Very Italian!

I really loved this movie. One of my favorite things about foreign movies is they are so real. By that I mean the characters are very believable. This movie is wonderful. The acting is superb and enjoyable. Two thumbs up for sure!

I thought Licia Maglietta was awesome in Bread and Tulips, which I stumbled upon when trying to learn Italian. I was pleased to find many of the same actors and actresses are in this film. Italian films have a different mindset compared to most American ones--more true to life and not always with a "sugary ending" as my Mom would say.

This story involves a lovely woman on the cusp of a certain age who is loving and supportive of her family & friends & hopeful. She accepts herself (a bit of supernatural perhaps) and others and gets her happy ending. Great fun!
