morbid curiousity required,

This review is from: Age Of Agony The (Paperback)
A professor lent me a copy of this book after a brief discussion of medical history. I pride myself on not being easily disturbed - I could only read 5-10 pgs at a time. It's horrific, but it's true. We totally take modern medicine for granted; in the 1800s the existence of microorganisms wasn't widely accepted, nor was the use of handwashing, sanitation, and they weren't 100% on why blood was necessary either. Bloodletting was still common. Childbirth was a nightmare. A strange sense of humor and a strong stomach are required for this highly interesting, but wholly disturbing account of medicine less than 150 years ago.
