Editorial Reviews

From CCM Magazine -- Subscribe Now!
She's come of age and her latest studio LP shows it. Amy Grant has arrived. Age to Age is a stunning collection of direct, mature and inspiring material, delivered with emotion and skill. More than anything else, this album ministers to me in a way I've not been touched by Christian music before.

The secular quality of this recording everything from arrangements, production, delivery and package is boldly evident and unusual for contemporary Christian music, even in this enlightened age. Perhaps one of the reasons is because it was recorded high in the crisp mountain air surrounding Jim Guercios Caribou Ranch in Nederland, Colo. Maybe its because of the production excellence of the producer Brown Bannister, engineer Jack Joseph Puig and executive producers Michael Blanton and Dan Harrell. But then, it could be the caliber of songs contained within the grooves.

Although all of the ten songs shine brilliantly in their own light, listening to "El-Shaddai" (God Almighty), a worshipful song of praise to the powerful and yet gentle Creator, is a knee-bending experience. The song was written by Michael Card and John Thompson and contains the phrase, "Age to age, You're still the same," from which the album received its name. Maybe not so scripturally drenched, but equally worshipful is the single released off the album, "Sing Your Praise to the Lord." The lavish introduction, complete with Hebrew-like riffs builds to a full orchestral crescendo before the vocal begins.

While on the subject of vocals, its hard to imagine that the insecure 16-year-old singer, who caught the ears of contemporary Christian music listeners five years ago with her debut LP, has matured into the passionate vocalist of Age to Age. Hope I haven't given a mushy, MOR-like impression, for if I have, erase it immediately. Amy rocks on a couple of cuts ("I Have Decided" and "Don't Run Away") and mellows in various degrees for a thoroughly contemporary finish.

One often wonders how a simple piece of vinyl can inspire such feelings of love for God. But since that is the intention of this album, it doesn't surprise me, it ministers to me. -- C. A. Burns (c) 1982 CCM Communications, Inc.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, It totally moved my soul to a new level!, July 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Age to Age (Audio CD)
Amy has come under fire for the direction her music has taken. Even here in the reviews, I see some of the "judgement". The Lord has used Amy to impact so many peoples lives and to know Him in a much deeper way. Amy followed the direction she felt she was being lead. "Age to Age" was the first Christian album I ever purchased back in 1983. It changed my life forever! "Raining on the inside" touched me so deeply, it caused me to sit and listen to this album over and over for 3 hours, just sobbing. What and incredibly moving experience this album was and continues to be. If you like Amy, you will love this one! A must have CD! Another "must have" from Amy Grant is "Lead Me On". That is by far one of the best albums ever made.

5.0 out of 5 stars Explosion of emotional and spiritual sentiment for all ears!, July 8, 2002
By Mr. Wynn (State of Confusion) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Age to Age (Audio CD)
I never used to listen to Christian music. In fact, I always thought it was pretentious and insincere because of all the fake acts I saw on TV. I was a kid--easily influenced by popular opinion but also very guarded about my own sense of spirituality.

I never even knew Amy had a Chrisitan pop career before "Heart in Motion." I fell in love with that album in the early 1990's when it came out. I was in high school, enjoyed those Top 40 pop tunes. I bought the CD's that followed, still not realizing that there was a whole repetoire preceding "Heart in Motion."

I started to attend a non-Catholic church and heard all songs I had never heard of before. Soloists came forth to share their favorite songs. I heard "El Shaddai" and "Fat Baby" sung. It took me 2 years to follow up on those songs and discovered that Amy Grant had recorded those in her early career.

I went on a search for the album that contained those songs. I never knew there were Christian bookstores, except for Catholic gift shops. I was at a regular record store and saw that they had "Age to Age" in their racks but it was not on sale and at a pretty steep price. I waited another 2 years to purchase that CD because I had received a gift certificate for Christmas.

When I got home, I put the CD in my stereo. From the very first notes (literally, 5 seconds into the CD!) of the first track, "Sing Your Praise to the Lord", I said (I'm telling the truth) to myself: "I LOVE THIS ALBUM!" And as every track played on, I knew I had found my newest favorite artist!

This album with its simplicity yet strong message touched my heart, who had never known Christian music before, aside from hymns sung at church. I started to buy Amy's other albums and just fell more in love with her sound and the messages in those songs have truly blessed me.

When she was going through her time of personal trial, my sensibilities were smacked down to the ground. Unlike the many other reviewers who became bitter by her "human moment" (just as they ALL are human), I was humbled because I realized that celebrity changes how we see other people when they are people just like you and me. I learned to appreciate her music more because now I felt like we were on the same level. I also learned never to place anyone on a higher plane except for Jesus Christ and I started to see that in her music, too.

"Age to Age" was the album that started it all for me and from what I've read, for most fans of Amy. It is clearly one of the best but not the last! I recommend this album to be the introduction to Christian music for all potential Contemporary Christian Music listeners!

5.0 out of 5 stars AGE TO AGE: not just a side companion for LEAD ME ON, August 27, 2004
By Sylvia Cushman (Manteca, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Age to Age (Audio CD)
AGE TO AGE is definitely a Christian music masterpiece, and should be treated that way. It's songs offer what contemporary Christian music fans wanted to hear in 1982. It has great praise-rockers ("Sing Your Praise To The Lord", "I Have Decided"), humorous songs ("Fat Baby"), songs that really touch your heart ("El Shaddai", "In A Little While", "Raining On The Inside", "Arms Of Love"), and songs that you can listen to anytime ("I Love A Lonely Day", "Don't Run Away", "Got To Let It Go"). Amy Grant really gave her absolute best on this album. Of course, nothing can beat LEAD ME ON, but AGE TO AGE is a masterpiece in its own right as well. If you want to travel to the beginnings of CCM, want some cheering up, or just can't find a CD to listen to, then get AGE TO AGE.
