The genius of this game is that they have taken the well-worn formula of standard Real Time Strategy (RTS) games and streamlined it down to its bare essentials, which means it is simple to learn (but not master) and can be played in 10-15 minutes, rather than 1-2 hours for a typical RTS game.

Rather than micro-managing lots of different units, in AoB you only have one ship to control. Your ship sails around the map capturing towns which then give you an income stream of one or two of the three resource types: rum, gold and wood. Combinations of these resources give you upgrades to your ship (either speed, armour or cannons) or to the defenses of your town.

There are also resources floating around in crates, and "power-ups" you can get which provide bombs, whirlpools and temporary invisibility, to spice up your sea battles and give you an extra edge.

Singe player mode is limited as the AI players are not very smart and will frustrate you when you play with them. There are 21 single-player "challenges" - which are fun - but think of them as training for multi-player mode.

Multi-player is where this game really shines! You can play 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 or 2v2v2v2. There are over 35 maps to play on - and you can also create your own with a map editor.

Best to play online with a mic, as communication is key when things get hectic and you are in a tight tussle with the opposition. Get some good team-mates and some challenging opposition - and this game is really FUN!

I have clocked up over 1000 online games so far - and I am only now starting to master the tactics and the layout of all the different maps.

In my opinion, this is by far the best game on XBLA - and it only costs 800 points ($10), which is amazing value. You can download a trial version and check out the online play for a limited time.

This game has a lot of stuff in it for the price... single player campaign, multiplayer, even a level editor. Age of Booty is a lot of fun :D

I don't know why but more arcade titles that focus at least half of its gameplay on the multiplayer should have multiplayer trials, (cough Death Tank). The biggest reason I purchased this game was due to this feature. Not knowing if the game would work or not, due to sub par broadband (satellite), I used the trial to play online. Games were fun, mostly lag free although some lag noticable (my end), and I was able to successfully join them.

After I purchased the game and went through the single player missions I got involved with the editor. You can get free maps when you enter the editor or trade and share with friends/community. This has lengthened the gameplay time I've had with this game immensely and have not gotten bored with this game. When working with a team the game can be a blast. The AI isn't bad either. Simple pick up and play controls and deep strategy makes this a must for any pirate loving gamer or someone who wants a little strategy in between shooters or other triple A titles.

This is one great little game that's worth every penny. From the co-op and online gaming goodness to the likability and ease of use, Age of Booty strikes all the right chords. It's got a create map editor, a single player mode, and is the perfect game for all age ranges.

Age of Booty is perhaps the least complicated Real Time Strategy game you may every play - and it is more the better for it. You take over a single ship sailing on a grid map in an effort to take over a certain amount of cities before your enemies do. As you collect floating crates, destroy villages, and capture cities you will collect one of three resources (gold, wood or mead,) that you utilize to upgrade your ship (speed, armor/HP, and cannons/attack) and your captured cities' defenses. The scramble to quickly capture as many of the cities that produce resources is hectic and fun. If you die, either by a city or by another ship, you merely lose one resource and start again at your base (a cool pirate volcano!) The small price promotes a recklessness that some other RTS games tend to play against, freeing you to play this game like an arcade game with an RTS backbone. Each of the challenges (single player) maps are fun and the later challenges live up to the name. But the part of this game that truly shines is in the multiplayer.

I play this split screen with my wife and two daughters, the youngest of whom is only 7, and we have a blast. Whether on the same team or against each other the constant action keeps everyone engaged, while the lack of complication allows younger players to enjoy the game doing simple tasks (my youngest collects the floating crates and destroys the villages.) But the experienced gamers will enjoy the strategy involved with capturing certain cities first based upon resources and deciding when to attack and when not to attack.

A map editor adds even more to the game allowing you to create a map that is perfect for your personal games. If you like someone else's maps, you can always download them from your friends or those you play against.

This game is an excellent RTS action game for players of all ages and levels.

I don't know why everyone doesn't own this game.

Between this and Bionic Commando Rearmed, why play anything else when you have friends over?

The best RTS game on Xbox Live, period. Age of Booty is fun for the whole family. Split Screen or Xbox Live, join the party on the high seas! ARR!

My buddies have been coming over and playing this every Friday as a standing event. We've put hours and hours into this game. It's easy to play but has loads of depth when you're playing with teammates who can coordinate and listen.

We usually play 2 on 2 on our couch but we'll occasionally go online as a team and wreak havoc against other teams via its team-based matching system (similar to Halo3).

For $10, you simply can't get a better multiplayer experience.

The easiest point and click strategy action game ever. Be sure to try multiplayer! Definitely one of the best on Live Arcade!

This is a great RTS for the console. The team dynamic in multiplayer is incredibly fun. It is simple and easy to learn but there are many strategic facets which makes the game continually enjoyable for many games to come.
