4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy on James Gillray, March 26, 2011

While the reproductions in the book are numerous and very fine, I would have liked to see more Rowlandson and Cruikshank prints. They are represented but "The Age of Caricature" is very heavy on James Gillray's colored etchings and various anonymous prints of the era. Gillray's work is wonderful but not the end all. The language of the text is very difficult to follow without a dictionary and thesaurus close at hand! A much better choice is "The Art of Satire: London in Caricature" by Mark Bills which is much easier to read and has more Rowlandson and Cruikshank works and less of Gillray and anonymous prints.
