Best Strategy Game Ever!,
By
This review is from: Age of Empires 2: Gold Edition (CD-ROM)
Age of Empires II is really fun. I've played a lot of strategy games, and this one is the best. WarCraftII, StarCraft, Majesty, WarCraft, Civilization, Centauri. But none of them were this good. The Graphics are really nice, and the gameplay is fun. It's really easy to use too. The Campaigns span over many civilizations and different time periods. It's a lot more fun with the expansion though, so I recommend that you buy the Gold Edition. There are many many civilizations to play around with, so gameplay has no end. The option to make your own maps and Campaigns is a blast. You can also choose different paths to take your civilizations along. You could make a huge trading community with large farmland. Or you could take control of the world with huge armies. Although when you first start out, you don't make that many units, but when you become more familiar with the game you will want to create larger armies, but the most units you can make is 200. -Good Music Track

I've lost significant hours of my life to this game. That's how fun it is! I'm not even much of a gamer. Unfortunately though, 1) multiplayer isn't supported between Mac and PC, and 2) multiplayer doesn't even work well between two Macs. A friend and I (both running Mac OS X v10.2) tried multiplayer with version 1.0.4, the latest version, and we kept getting "out of sync" errors. Based on the reviews here and on the web, multiplayer problems seem to be common. So be warned. Kudos for the native Mac OS X application, though; I hope they can fix the multiplayer problems in a software update.

As simple as that.
I've been playing this game for ages. Ever since the beginning of the first age of empires and the rise of Rome, I've been following this game. It's given me, my family & friends endless hours of entertainment. I've also played other "age of...." games, but none seem to pair up with this one. It's basically all the same idea. You start with low resources and a few villagers, and have to build from there & fight your opponent. You can follow the campaigns or play multiplayer against each other, or teamed up against the computer. You can also play deathmatch if you prefer. You get to pick a civilization, and each one has its own unique characteristic and feature. From the Huns to the Greeks, Spanish, Aztecs, Britons...and a whole bunch more! The game has already been out for a while, and still is better in my opinion than the newer "age of..." games. I've tried newer ones but cannot pair up with this one. I recently bought a Mac, and this game shortly after it, only to be dissapointed that I could no longer play with my brother in multiplayer mode using a PC. Other than that, there are no other flaws to the game, and it plays as well as the PC version. I rate it 4 stars instead of 5 just because of that, multiplayer between Mac and PC is not possible. Here's my honest recommendations: If you like to play, if you like adventure, strategy, then give this game a try if you haven't already. You'll enjoy every minute of it and won't get bored of playing.

At last. A Mac version of Age Of Empires II. Altought it is a great game it seems that these guys didn't have time to finish it before October, 31 (shipping day) and shipped the beta version. I get an "Unexpectely Quit" error all the time (Tried it on different machines), and this [is bad] when you are playing a multiplayer game. I hope they fix it soon.

(...) I can say that AOE 2 is my second favorite game of all time, it is so well done... You get to control civilizations from the Britons to the Turks to the Byzantines, and build swordsmen, archers, knights, and castles; what could be more fun? Unfortunately, it took 2 years from the time it was released on the PC to get it over to the Mac. It's here now, though, so we can finally play it.It's not be the best port in the world, but at least it's there, and it hardly if ever crashes after you update CarbonLib. Besides, you can just save your game when important things happen in it... Aside from getting a PC, there's no other way to play it, and I definitely recommend this as a must-have for anyone who plays games on a Mac. One last thing: For some reason, the hotkey for gate and archery range are both 'A', so you have to change it under options to '/', which is what it's supposed to be...

Having played every one of the AoE games from the very beginning, I was delighted to find a Mac port of AoE II Gold. The gameplay is great, and is seriously addictive. The only downside (which has resulted in this game receiving only four stars) is that network play between Macs and PCs is not possible, and gameplay between two or more Macs is problematic. This is highly unusual for a Mac game, but of course, the problem can be seen written all over a big banner in the main screen "Microsoft."
This is the only issue i have with this game, in all other respects it is one of the best strategy games ever made.

Age of Empires 2 Gold is one of the best games I have ever played! With the 5 new civilizations to control, new campaigns, new game types, real world maps, and many new changes to The Age of Kings, the Conquerors expansion pack adds 10 times more excitement to the already thrilling game. For anyone who doesn't mind a little blood, this is a stupendous game that every gamer must have!

This game is so much fun!! You choose from some of the greatest civilizations of this plant. You choose from the Britons to the Celts to the Persians to the Saracens to the Mayans and much more. You then change your tiny civilization into a triving empire, conquering your enemies and expanding your empire. You can build so many things. Castles, seige workshops, archery ranges, barracks, docks, and even your own Wonder of the World. The Age of Kings campaign is great, you start with William Wallace, where you learn how to play the game, while you help the Scottish drive the British out of Scotland. From there you can help Joan of Arc win the Hundred Years' War, or join Saladin in the Middle East. In the Conquerors campaign ride with Attila the Hun, help El Cid of Spain or Emperor Montezuma of the Aztecs. So, the choice is yours. You will have a blast with this game!

Age of Empires II gold pack is the best game I have ever played. It combines strategy and skill to run your civilization succesfully. Having the option of being more than one civilization gives you the chance to explore different civilizations units and archetecture, as well as to govern it to victory. Overall, this is the best game I have ever played and I won't play anything else. It is also educational. Even though I am nearing fifty and have studied ancient civilizations for half my life, it still teaches me new things.
