Book Description

0446695920 978-0446695923 May 16, 2006
- Age-Proof Your Mind is the first book to provide a comprehensive method for readers to test their memory. The groundbreaking Memory Stress Test can help readers detect memory problems before it's too late. - With more than four million Americans suffering from Alzheimer's, and millions more from degenerative brain disorders, there is a large audience eager for the information in this book. - Other titles on Alzheimer's and preventing memory loss are strong sellers. The Memory Bible (Hyperion, 2002) has sold close to 50,000 hardcover copies, Brain Longevity (Warner, 1999) has sold close to 70,000 copies combined, and The 36 Hour Day (Warner, 1992; revised and updated, 2001) has sold nearly 400,000 copies in all editions. - Dr. Tan is the director of the Memory Disorders Clinic at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School Division on Aging. He is also a researcher at the MIT AgeLab. His research has received national and international coverage, and he speaks regularly on Alzheimer's disease and memory improvement techniques.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Whether readers experience occasional lapses ("Where did I put my car keys?" "Why did I open this closet door?") or are concerned about a family tendency toward Alzheimer's, Tan offers information, exercises, resources and advice to help them sort out whether their memory loss is minor or indicates a deeper problem. The author, who directs a Boston memory disorders clinic, explores the connection between diet and memory and explains the effects Vitamin E, estrogen and alcohol may have on the brain. Some of his advice may seem standard (get fit, eat healthy foods, reduce stress), but other suggestions (ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory medicines may help prevent Alzheimer's) will likely pique interest. Tan offers a test for readers to check their mental mettle; they can repeat it later to check their progress. The author also provides tips for improving short-term memory, information about Alzheimer's research, a detailed list of clinical trials and even recipes featuring foods high in brain-boosting antioxidants. And while Tan doesn't shy away from noting that mild cognitive impairment, or MCI, can sometimes be a precursor to Alzheimer's disease, his message is empowering: "Making certain lifestyle changes that can decrease the levels of brain... inflammation and sustain intellectual activity may be able to alter the course of MCI."

4.0 out of 5 stars Age-proofing your mind is irresistible!, July 18, 2006
This review is from: Age-Proof Your Mind: Detect, Delay, and Prevent Memory Loss--Before It's Too Late (Paperback)
One night I spent a good hour frantically searching for my cell phone, which I thought I had misplaced. Eventually, I reached into my jacket pocket out of habit and guess what I found? My cell phone of course! Complete memory lapses had been happening to me a lot - more than I could attribute to just being tired - and this is what ultimately inspired me to purchase this book. After I recently "misplaced" my cell phone, a book offering to "age-proof" my mind was too much to resist.

I was honestly convinced that my memory was becoming like a sieve. But, reading Tan's book I learned that memory loss is reversible and avoidable. I took the evaluation for mental fitness, got tips on healthy aging, suggestions for brain exercises and even facts on the connection between diet and memory.

All in all, I found this book to be very thorough and helpful for those who think their memory is slipping. After reading this book, I discovered that online services like Agogus.com help improve memory, as they focus on enhancing mental fitness. Agogus is particularly fun, with great topics to read; I'm actually having more fun socially too. And - I haven't lost my cell phone lately, so it must be working!

5.0 out of 5 stars informative and straight forward, May 11, 2005
Thank you for this book. I learned a lot about memory loss and how to possibly prevent it without being overwhelmed with medical phraseology. I look forward to hearing more about the latest research in the cause and cure for Alzheimer's Disease.

...but actual nutrient and supplement advice for hanging onto your marbles a little while longer. There's also more exercises in there than the run-of-the-mill Sudoku and crossword puzzle games.
