5.0 out of 5 stars the literary key to ezra-nehemiah, April 13, 2011
This review is from: In an Age of Prose: A Literary Approach to Ezra-Nehemiah (American Academy of Religion Academy Series) (Paperback)
This academic monograph, while not a commentary proper, provides more insight into Ezra-Nehemiah than any of the conventional commentaries. This book is divided into structure, characters, and a contrast between 1 Esdras and Ezra-Nehemiah. While not intended as a theological treatise, Eskenazi's analysis of this book highlights the ideology/theology which underlies the structure. This SBL monograph in conjunction with a standard commentary like Williamson would be all you would ever need to understand this enigmatic book. I have a shelf full of Ezra-Nehemiah commentaries but never really felt I grasped the "big-picture" which the writer of Ezra-Nehemiah had in mind until I read "In An age of Prose". This book is full of "aha" moments.
