This third volume of Churchill's great work makes wonderful narrative history.The volume begins in the late 17th Century and concludes with Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo. In the interim we are introduced to the various monarchs of the Hanover dynasty, the emergence of an independent America after the revolutionary war and, finally, the positioning of England as a power after seeing off Napoleon. This truly was the period where the English speaking peoples began their rise to a prominent place on the world stage. I can heartily recommend Churchill to all readers. He was a great political leader but, it needs to be remembered, he earned his income from writing and journalism and was also a recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature. |
