Book Description

2006
From the author's introduction: Sam & Max have been Freelance Policing since the "Dawn of the Disco Era". The images in this book span from the duo's humble, barely-drawn beginnings all the way to the humble, slightly less bearely-drawn present day. This sketchbook loosely follows the chronology of Sam & Max through the years. From homemade comics to officially published comics - a well-received computer game through a couple of ill-fated ones - an animated TV series, and most recently a new multi-media game still in progress. I've included characters who are still waiting for their shot at fame and the scratchy germs of ideas that will somehow be put to use if I live long enough. Many of these images have never been viewed outside of production offices or the dusty strata of my flat files. Enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't fall for ripoff prices, October 31, 2007

There's an incredibly unscrupulous seller here, marketing the book for over $600. DON'T FALL FOR IT. The book may be purchased brand new at the Telltale Games website for an affordable $17.99. Caveat Emptor indeed!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mostly for Nerds, July 31, 2007
By
This review is from: The Age of S&M - A Sam & Max Sketchbook (Paperback)
There isn't much text in this book, so don't expect a lot of reading material. What is in the book is a collection of rare art from Purcell himself, some of which dating back to when he was a little boy drawing cartoons on notebook paper.

While the casual fan may not see anything interesting in the pages, the hardcore and the die-hards probably already bought this book simply because of the rarity of being able to see storyboard art from the Freelance Police Saturday Morning Cartoon show, as well as concept art for toys that never got produced for various reasons. The biggest draw to the book would be the concept art for one of the two cancelled Sam & Max game titles prior to Sam & Max: Season 1.

A must buy for anyone that likes the Freelance Police, and a requirement for anyone who likes to study an artist's sketch collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm on the internet!, February 14, 2008

This is a fine book! Hot damn!

Lots of neat artwork that's never been seen by the human eye! I'd only recommend this if you are a crazy Sam & Max fan otherwise... stick to the comics if you want Sam & Max in print. It's not worth what the sellers on Amazon are charging and that's all I have to say about that!
The second sketchbook "The Effigy Mound" is still for sale as Telltale Games for under $20 so I'd jump on that since it's cheaper and of the two sketchbooks I think it's the better one!
G'bye!
