Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

"In the author's controversial view, terrorism is a side-show affecting the lives of a relative handful of people," PW reported. According to this update of Laqueur's Terrorism, the danger of international terrorism is not in the acts themselves, but in the possibility of triggering a full-scale war.

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrorism, A complete Study, April 23, 2001
This review is from: The Age of Terrorism (Paperback)
If you are doing a research on Terrorism, than this is the place to begin, as I did. Since it was first published in 1987, it is a bit outdated as it does not address the more current problems pertaining to the globalization and constant upgrading of technology but it gives an excellent background into the origins of the word Terrorism and how it came to imply its current meaning. It further discusses the philosophy behind the acts starting with the early Greeks' ideology leading into the ideology of 20th century. What was initially considered an act of great justice and a method of fighting tyranny is now viewed completely opposite. It explains the social set-up and political justifications of the groups taking this route to voice their opinions.

The author goes on to address the issue of the Terrorist glamorized with the medium of Cinema and written word. The public attentions that such acts receive have only encouraged this method of voicing political and/or religious beliefs. Finally, author goes on to discuss and define the Terrorism from the standpoint of Nationalism and Separatism and Left and Right.

This is a very easy to comprehend book for beginners in this subject with concise information addressing all the key issues dealing with the history, philosophy, sociology and politics of Terrorism.
