This book glorifies the United Nations and its attempts to usurp national sovereignty in the name of sustained development. Rather than fall into lock step with the United Nation's plan for globalization, America should shun the UN plans and adopt its own plans for climate control.

This wordy book on the 1992 Earth Summit was a reading requirement for a class I once took. Most people in the class did not finish it. Although the book presents several interesting ideas and important policy directives for global environmental problems, it loses the reader with overstated details. The ideas and goals presented look good on paper, but leave you scratching your head after reading them, asking yourself "how?" However, this is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of global environmental discussions and policy.

The book itself is of secondary importance to me. The content is disturbing for the following reasons:

UN Agenda 21 is an ongoing attempt to fashion the world into some sort of 'sustainable' existence for an ever increasing population. On the surface it sounds rather Utopian, after all, who would argue with the desired well-being of all human and animal inhabitants on planet earth?

Three major objections come to mind:

1) The means to an end would be a forced reduction of the world's population: some estimate that the world can only be sustainable if less than 2 billion people were alive. There are almost 7 billion people living on earth at the present time: Where would 5 billion people go?

2) One of the major means of accomplishing UN Agenda 21's goal would be for developed countries to pay for the undeveloped countries' sustainable infrastructure. This means that a large amount of tax money would be pouring out of America for the benefit of underdeveloped countries. Americans are already over-taxed as it is.

3) Most importantly, American taxpayers have not been part of the dialog in UN Agenda 21's stated goals. The last I heard, the USA is a Constitutional Republic: We the People are supposed to be sovereign and that means we should have a say-so as to where out taxes go, especially since those tax dollars would be supporting unconstitutional projects. The UN has already usurped many of our US prerogatives unconstitutionally.

The book itself is incomplete because UN Agenda 21 has been evolving, exponentially, since 1992. For those interested, merely Google "UN Agenda 21" and you will be amazed what the United Nations has in store for the United States of America and 'other' sovereign countries.

My unsolicited advice is for America to clean up its own act by restoring its battered Constitution as well as its own infrastructure: Then if other countries wanted to emulate the USA they could use their own resources and tax dollars to do so. The USA has always been willing to aid others in constructive projects but let it be with the consent of the American people....
