Book Description

January 1, 1997
This is the first work that appears in the West devoted to the figure of Baba Aghoreshwar Bhagwan Ramji. The extraordinary life of this saint, with no doubts the most renewed spiritual teacher in the second part of this century in the holy city of Benares as well as all around India, so far has been scrupulously kept within the ancient tradition of the Guru-disciple relationship only. His charismatic example carefully escaped any kind of commercialization in order to maintain intact the sacredness and mystery of a powerful spiritual path, the Aghor Sadhana. Baba, as he was known and addressed to by most of his devotees and disciples, has a life story that is inspiring to spiritual seekers and laymen alike. It is rich of mysterious events as well as it poses the perfect model of a life spent in service to all. Basically, this book shows the simple path to achieve what Baba himself accomplished in his life time, that ultimate state of consciousness beyond duality called Avadhoot. AGHOR

The word Aghor literally means "that which is not difficult or terrible". Aghor is simple and natural state of consciousness. There is no place for feelings of fear, hatred, disgust or discrimination in the eyes of an Aughar. A person who practices these virtues may be designated as an Aughar or Aghori. With constant practice when the soul is established in that state, such a person becomes an Avadhut regardless of his path. An Aghoreshwar is an Avadhut who has gone through all the various stages of Aghor and then has returned to society for the benefit of others. Even though an Aghoreshwar remains above and beyond all social and material illusions, distinctions, and categories, he can bring many social reforms into effect. Realizing his divine nature, retaining the carefree, unattached Aghor state of being, he may have at the same time the appearance of one observing the contemporary social norm rather than a recluse. The term Aghor goes back to the farthest reaches of time. One of the five faces of Shiva was known as "Aghor". The word is as old as Shiva himself. In the SHIVA PURANA, one of Indias oldest legends, there is a hymn to the glory of Shiva by Pushpadanta, head of the Gandharvas, called the "Shiva Mahimnah Stotram". One of its verses is: Aghoranna paro mantro Nasti tatvam Guro param.

The very name of Aghor (Shiva, or the one who has attained the state of Aghor) is a mantra that is above all other mantras. There is nothing higher to be known than the real nature of the Guru. In the past the word "Aghor" implied something mysterious. Very, very slowly, over thousands of years, its meaning came to include methods and practices used by sadhus. After the preshistoric association of Aghor with Lord Shiva, another legendary being was not only considered by the ancients to have realized the state of Aghor but was believed to have propounded and taught the knowledge of it to others. This was Lord Dattatreya. Many other saints and mahatmas who embodied this Aghor state arose at their destined times in history, while at other times the lineage became dormant, like embers hidden under ashes. Eventually the methods and means to achieve this Aghor state began to be communicated in guru-disciple relationships. However, the practices continued to be little known.

HISTORY
In the sixteenth century, a great saint called Baba Kinaram was known as Aghoreshwar. The story of Baba Kinaram tells of his wandering for years until he attained complete knowledge by having the darshan of Bhagwan Dattatreya, who appeared to him in the Girnar mountains, a holy place in Gujarat state. Later in his life Baba Kinaram wrote a book called "Viveksar", said to be the most authentic treatise on the principles of Aghor. In his book he wrote that when he understood whan Bhagwan Dattatreya was saying to him, he saw that the whole world, the whole universe, is situated in this human body, a vast world perfect in all respects, which was called Maya. Maya and its every transformation was present inside his body. Baba Kinaram established an Ashram in Varanasi, called "Krim Kund". He initiated many social reforms during the tumultuous times of the Moghul invasion when the Indian people were being persecuted. The direct lineage of the twelve Aghoreshwars that began with Baba Kinaram extends from the sixteenth century until the present. When Baba Bhagwan Ram became the 12th Aghoreshwar in this lineage, he was likened to Baba Kinaram because he had a strong sense of social responsibility, identifying himself with suffering humanity, and waiting to help the people in their struggle against social injustices. As in Baba Kinaram's time, there were social problems the people were unable to handle.

Sometimes spiritual leaders are able to give the people some protection against injusics but there are other periods of time when the fires of spiritual strength burn low, embers under ashes. Recognizing the need for change Baba Bhagwan Ram renewed the socially conscious spirit of Baba Kinaram when he established a new called Shri Sarweshwari Samooh and dedicated it to help the poor and the afflicted. The ashes leapt into flame again, being fed by the spiritual fuel of another Aghoreshwar. In order to maintain the seat of Aghor tradition as a continuum, Baba initiated his own disciple, Siddhartha Gautam Ram, as the head of Krim Kund so he could be free to follow his social callings. Krim Kund and Shri Sarveshwari Samooh are on the opposite sides of the Ganges at Varanasi, with many more Aghor ashrams in various locations in India and a number of centers and ashrams in other countries. All of them are working in cooperation with each other to maintain the ancient tradition as well as to take a freshly motivated direction towards social services and integration of Aghor practices into the life of the community.

5.0 out of 5 stars New light on Aghor, April 18, 2000
By
This review is from: Aghor Guru : Oasis of Stillness (Paperback)
The Aghor tradition is probably the most secret branch of the Shakta religion which itself is the extremist part of Tantrism. One can come to know about Aghor from two main sources. The first is from scholar works like Mircea Eliade's "Yoga. Immortality and Freedom" where Aghoris are depicted in just a couple of pages as eccentric ascetic-magicians equalized to the successors of a much older ascetic order, the Kapalikas (cf. David Lorenzen's "Kapalikas and Kalamukhas. Two Lost Shaivite Sects"). This perspective deals with few reports and does not provide any information about Aghor spiritual practices in the present age. The second source consists of the three books by Robert E. Svoboda (cf. "Aghora. At the Left Hand of God", "Agora II. Kundalini", "Aghora III. The Law of Karma"). Here, Aghor sadhana is depicted in an atmosphere of thrilling sensationalism: miracles, supernatural powers, the emergence of astonishing levels of reality... It is an enjoyable read if you do not pose the question, "Where does reality finish, and where does the narrative invention begin?" Beside these two approaches, "Aghor Guru: Oasis of Stillness" opens a new way to enter the essence of the Aghor spiritual tradition. The most relevant part of the book is devoted to the life of a contemporary Aghor saint, Baba Aghoreshwar Bhagwan Ramji (1937-1992). Through his life, the reader assimilates not only mere notions, but especially can develop a new understanding of the human condition and its potentialities. The narration of Baba's life is done with the accuracy and devotion of an ancient hagiographer. But what I have found surprising, besides all the miraculous events constantly occurring around him (he never claimed any responsibility), is that although he was followed by hundreds of thousands of people in India, very few came to know of him in the West. His teachings have the integrity of not having been commercialized. Another important point is that thanks to this book the path of Aghor, which seemed mysterious and unapproachable for centuries, is now revealed in a practical way. It stays away from the sensationalism of the trend of New Age, and at the same time remains faithful to its ancient roots. In this sense, the section related to the founding father of this lineage, Baba Kinaram (XVI cent.), is of particular interest. From him descends a "parampara" (uninterrupted succession of Guru-disciple relationships) that lasts up to the present. The author himself belongs to the Aghor lineage, and this fact increases the value of the work, making it a reliable source. The book is of interest both for scholars and spiritual seekers.

5.0 out of 5 stars SERENITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE, April 20, 2000
By
Jan Haag (Seattle, Washington, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aghor Guru : Oasis of Stillness (Paperback)
OASIS OF STILLNESS by Aughar Harihar Ram is an exceptional biography, beautifully told by one of those rare individuals, an Indian with both an Eastern and Western education, who is able to speak of the life of an Indian sadhu in terms that Westerners can grasp. OASIS OF STILLNESS is the life story of the author's Guru, Aghoreshwar Bhagwan Ramji, a great being of a tradition that has been much misunderstood by European/American scientific-realists who, unable to cope with the problems they have created, manage to be mystified and horrified by too many of the works of God.

The Aghoris of India are those who see God every-where in every-thing. The very word Aghor (a name of Shiva) means "not terrible". "There is no place for feelings of fear, hatred, disgust or discrimination in the eyes of an Aughar."* Immersed in universal compassion, Baba Bhagwan Ramji dedicated his life to helping the poor, the afflicted, those the rest of the world would like to ignore, the lepers, the homeless, the widows, the hungry -- one of the most recent projects of the Sri Sarveshwari Samooh Ashram, which Baba Ramji founded, is to provide education for the street children, the orphans, the beggar children of Banaras.

If you read this book you will read of a great soul who, in his youth -- indeed, from the time he was seven -- began to wander on the path of solitude, meditation, withdrawal from society. By his early teens, having gained peace, stillness, serenity, a depth of understanding and compassion deep enough to encompass all living things, he returned to Banaras. There, this holy man matured and, becoming the spiritual leader of the Aghora lineage, maintained a network of ashrams and sanctuaries throughout India. He and his disciples also created new ashrams and institutions-of-aid sustained by a belief in helping those who are most in need. Later, Baba Aghoreshwar Bhagwan Ramji visited the Western world, where recently, less than a decade after his death, his influence is beginning to be felt.

Read with awareness, OASIS OF STILLNESS may change your outlook on life, may set you on a path to serenity, and develop in you a passion to work for social justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Time for west to realise true spirituality, October 24, 2004
This review is from: Aghor Guru : Oasis of Stillness (Paperback)
Any amount of praise for this book wont do justice to its worth. Its main purpose is to benefit the english speaking humans who could not have otherwise ever been able to even come close to knowing what Aghor is all about. Its sad to note that even now one of the reviewers calls Aghori tradition as a part of shakta tradition. Its his ignorance.I am convinced that this book is only a beginning to initiate the western world to the ultimate spiritual experience. there are a few other books on Aghor in english but they will be made available to the west only when the Aghoreshwar thinks its time for that. I appeal to the western world to let go off their prejudices and approach it with an open mind. The present times are tumultous ones and the society has to change in order to bring order. An aughar is one who is continously striving for this. let us give him support. let us try and understand them. This book has no alternative.
