About the Author

Jan Beaver is a Ph.D. educator with 25 years of experience in the software industry. His experience covers the gamut of management, development, QA, and technical writing. His first practical exposure to Scrum was a dramatic eye-opening experience that for the first time demonstrated that there really was a better way not just to develop software, but a better way to work in general. Jan is an expert Agile trainer and coach who has worked with a wide variety of companies in an equally wide variety of industries including telecommunications, medical, insurance, media, utilities, and smart-grid energy. He specializes in bringing Scrum and broader Agile and Lean principles and practices to teams, helping them to become effective, productive, and self-sustaining. He also works at the enterprise level using both training and coaching to help organizations become successful in their Agile practice.

The first thing you'll notice when you pick up this little gem is the attention to quality and concise messaging throughout. The second thing you'll notice is that Dr. Beaver knows his "stuff". in this crisp narrative he explains not just the "how" of being on a scrum team but also the "why". Dr. Beaver understands management in its historical context as well as in its modern contexts. As Dr. Beaver compels us to have a thorough understanding of the challenges when traditional management styles clash with the emerging disciplines in projects requiring pure human, mental, ideas and thoughts to be successful. The agile team community of practice will be grateful to Dr. Beaver for creating this guide that is certain to find a place on the bookshelves, and in the hearts and minds, of practicing "Agilistas" around the world.

A lucid and engaging book that addresses the nuts-and-bolts of how to implement Agile within your software development team effectively. The author presents his views and recommendations on the how-and-why of the Agile method with passion but without the preachiness that creeps into other books on the subject. I recommend this book for both those managers considering Agile and developers that are avid users. A fine guide to how your team can get the most out of Agile, well done!

This is a great starter book for teams new to Scrum or just starting an agile adoption. Jan covers the basics with flair, keeping it short and sweet. He also adds some extra direction in areas that transitioning teams face, like the sections on individual team member capacity and whole team skill balancing using a team spectrograph (chapter 3). And he has very helpful chart examples you can follow, my favorite being the release build-up (chapter 8). These are tactical tips you won't find in other "what is scrum" books, and I've found them very appropriate and helpful.

The book's focus on the Team aspects of Agile is what makes this book so unique. He shares his Agile coaching experiences in a very beneficial and unique way. Understanding how to help a group of people working in Agile to evolve into a Team that is doing Agile is no small feat. Jan brings a lot of real world experience to bear here. If you or your organization is struggling with helping the team become a true Team, this book will definitely help you move down that path with greater ease. Highly recommended!
