5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand, great ideas for competitions.
I found this book easy to read and understand. Ideas for building your own jumps and where to go to find pre-made obstacles. Introduces the dog without scaring it to every manner of jumps you might find in the ring. Also gives the handler a clear and definite way to deal with dogs who run out or jump. Talks about how the handler should position her/himself to the...

3.0 out of 5 stars For beginners only
This book certainly offers a good jump start for beginners but if you're beyond the introductory level there's not much you can learn here. The focus is very much on teaching your dog how to navigate obstacles but there's little on advanced handling techniques and how to practice them.

The section on building your own equipment looks quite good but for people like...

I found this book easy to read and understand. Ideas for building your own jumps and where to go to find pre-made obstacles. Introduces the dog without scaring it to every manner of jumps you might find in the ring. Also gives the handler a clear and definite way to deal with dogs who run out or jump. Talks about how the handler should position her/himself to the dog and the basic obedience commands needed and/or used. A must for everyone interested in the sport as well as those who have excitable dogs and need a way to channel that energy.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great book for starting out in agility!!!!, December 12, 1998
This review is from: Agility Training: The Fun Sport for All Dogs (Howell reference books) (Hardcover)
This was a great book. I bught for my dog to give him something to do. He was so smart and it seemed a waste brain power not to teach something challenging. This book is easy to understand and even tells how to build ALL of the equipment. You HAVE to buy this book if you want to train agility. It's great.

This book is great! Detailed enough for the advanced, yet easy enough to understand for the beginner. Detailed instructions on building your own jumps, see-saws, weave poles, etc. make the book even better!

This was a great book. It shows how to pick a good agility dog, right from the start, all aspects of agility trainning as well as obedience training, and shows how to build your own agility obsticles, which came in very handy for me. -Elizabeth Alve-Hedegaar

4.0 out of 5 stars Basic introductory book, for the novice with high goals, October 22, 2003

This review is from: Agility Training: The Fun Sport for All Dogs (Howell reference books) (Hardcover)
As a beginner I found this book VERY helpful. It is excellently written in a down-to-earth manner, with tips and hints for the greenest of dog/handler teams. It covers all of the basics such as what your dog should know BEFORE you train agility, how to train obstacles, basic right/left-hand turns, and even goes on into obstacle "proofing" and a few more intermediate level topics. As always, Jane Simmons-Moake made sure that you can't fail by putting in tips on "what to do if your dog..." and a very helpful obstacle-building section which is especially nice for those who have high goals. It is an essential book for any agility lover, especially those looking for an introduction to the most fun thing you can do with your canine pal!

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Agility Lover, April 27, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Agility Training: The Fun Sport for All Dogs (Howell reference books) (Hardcover)
This book contains good information for both the beginner and the experienced competitor. It explains the obstacles well (it even shows you how to make professional obstacle yourself!) and covers everything from the organizations to the competitions. It also included (which I found fun) some examples of courses and sequences to practice with. The only flaw I found was that it was a bit dated, like using wood instead of PVC and street addresses to the organizations, but no emails or web sites. Awesome book overall, though.

More information than I thought possible in a book. This book offers step by step training methods, a logical order of training behaviors, and lots of resources for equipment, build your own or to purchace. Some of the information is a bit "dated"

The section on building your own equipment looks quite good but for people like me who can hardly handle a hammer it's probably better (and less nerve wrecking) to simply shell out the money and order ready-to-use equipment.
