Book Description

0979577748 978-0979577741 September 25, 2007
Aging in America was written to assist seniors, their families, and the people who care for seniors. Information is critical when making choices about health care. Sometimes, the decision that needs to be made is whether to move into an assisted living center or to age at home. When choosing assisted living, one must choose between multitudes of facilities or choose a private group home. If choosing to stay in one's own home, many need to choose an aide to assist them. And, of course, a complex and important choice is whether to stay with traditional Medicare or go with an HMO. As an Occupational Therapist, the author is dedicated to working with seniors in nursing homes, hospitals, hospice care, and in their own homes since 1989. She wrote this book in response to the helplessness and frustration she felt watching the results of our health care system deteriorating over the last 15 years. Aging in America will help seniors and those who love and serve them make more knowledgeable decisions regarding future health care choices.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!, February 26, 2008
This review is from: Aging in America: A Wake-Up Call & Call to Action for Seniors & Those Who Love & Serve Them (Paperback)
This is an extremely helpful book especially for anyone dealing with seniors or aging parents. Although I have been in healthcare for 20 plus years, it was difficult to see my mother start to show signs of memory loss and mobility problems. It has been a struggle to address and recognize what we needed to provide for my mother as well as, obtain the assistance she needs. I gained lots of hope and direction from reading this book. It offers so many resources that are available to address the issues of caring for an aging adult. The author was straight forward about what is really happening in our healthcare system today. She provides valuable information that will help caregivers to avoid the many obstacles that exist in trying to provide a safe loving environment to the seniors who provided the same and more for their children. This book is definitely a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Candid Information, February 9, 2008

Very insightful and thought provoking. We all hear about nursing home horror stories but this gives you a very clear picture from someone who actually sees everything from the "inside" as well as experiences in dealing with nursing homes/insurance from a personal aspect. I like the fact that this is a short, easy-read book with a valuable "work-book" in the back as well as a home safety checklist. If you are a senior or are/will be caring for a senior - you need to read this book!
