Questionable Creative Choices Marr an Otherwise Solid Thrash Metal Album,
By Oliverio Casas "Heavy Metal Fan from Northern... (Montevideo, Uruguay) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Agony Of Death (Special Ed.) (Audio CD)
Ok, I'll confess. I'm a major Holy Moses fan, and despite her age, I still consider Sabina Classen the personification of hotness when it comes to heavy metal female singers. Those familiar with the band won't be surprised by this release: it still features the high speed mercy less thrash that sometimes borders on death metal sound that we've all loved since the mid 80s, with Sabina's hoarse, "no way that's a chick singing" vocals on top. However, unlike previous Holy Moses offerings, most songs on the disc feature keyboard fade outs that I guess were included to build some kind of atmosphere, but actually kill the music's momentum by adding up to two minutes of dead weight at the end of almost every track. This is the reason that, despite my favorable disposition towards the band, I can't get myself to like this album. See, there are twelve tracks on this disc that drag along for almost seventy minutes. If all the useless keyboards add-ons were chopped off we would get a much shorter and effective album, since atmosphere is the last thing you need when it comes to skull rattling, gut punching thrash like this. So ultimately, this could've been a very solid album, and as much as I hate saying this, we got a bunch of decent thrash metal songs hiding somewhere in between lame keyboard interludes instead.
