5.0 out of 5 stars You are in the GPO and you are surrounded, December 1, 2003

This review is from: Agony at Easter: The 1916 Irish Uprising (Hardcover)
Wow you are completely transported to Dublin 1916 and you are in the General Post Office. This very well researched, very scholarly book, reads like a novel. I have researched this topic endlessly, and know more about it than I care to tell, and I still found myself turning the pages to find out what happened next. My only disappointement was that in 1916 the rebels split up into several small groups. One intent on taking St. Stephens Green (a park in Dublin) one to take Boland's Bakery, one to take the Four Courts, and one to take Dublin Castle, along with the main body that was to take over the GPO for the rebel's headquaters. Only the GPO is covered in this book, but covered magnificantly. If two or three other books were published by Mr. Coffey detailing the others areas of the rebellion in this same manner, with the same attention to detail, and the same thoroughness, I would buy them immediately. His description of the death of the O'Rahilly is as tragic and ironic as the rest of the rebellion. This book is an absolute must have book for any library displaying even the smallest section on Irish History. Fantastic!
