5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect album, full of humor and smarts

3.0 out of 5 stars I struggle with this album...
Because we all adore the canon of Rick's comedy work on the small and big screen, this is something altogether different. We, as fans, come to expect the same humor and delivery from our comedians, and so I look for some sort of linear progression, from SCTV to Little Shop to Spaceballs to his NYTimes pieces, etc....
But Agoraphobic Cowboy is a big departure. It's...

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect album, full of humor and smarts, February 28, 2006
This review is from: Agoraphobic Cowboy (Audio CD)
I was fortunate enough to hear Rick Moranis perform "Press Pound" on Conan O'Brien's show. I immediately began tapping my foot and smiling at the smart lyrics and sprightly melody. I immediately purchased Agoraphobic Cowboy on amazon, and I was amazed at how good this album is. Backed by outstanding musicians, each song is an irresistible combination of great melody and intelligent lyrics. I was struck at how respectful Rick and his band is to the genre of country music, while still poking gentle fun at it. And the songs are just so good. I dare you not to tap your foot and smile along with Nine More Gallons, SOS, Oh So Bucco or Four More Beers.

But the highlight, for me, is I Ain't Goin' Nowhere. Wonderful, rhyming lyrics combined with an amazingly fast-paced melody make this an instant classic.

Great job, Rick. Never knew you had a cowboy inside you. Looking forward to more songs from your home on the range.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, laugh-out-loud hilarious, yet thought-provoking, February 24, 2006
This review is from: Agoraphobic Cowboy (Audio CD)
Intelligent humor is an odd thing in the music business; it comes and it goes. Ray Stevens was pretty good at it, as was Roger Miller; not-so-coincidentally, you can hear the influence of both of those performers on this record.

I won't even attempt to summarize these songs one-by-one; that would be too difficult, and I'd be inclined to include too many quotes (every song is a perfect example of witty, intelligent wordplay). There are love songs, drinking songs, train songs...the fact is, this is a solid traditional country record, but intelligent enough to appeal to the masses. Moranis's humor is sharp and decisive, his songwriting abilities are far above most contemporary country stars, and his voice is melodic enough to convey the messages of his songs in a user-friendly manner. THE AGOROPHOBIC COWBOY is a must-have for listeners who like their music smart, witty, and brilliantly unique.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Why do birds suddenly appear?", February 8, 2006
This review is from: Agoraphobic Cowboy (Audio CD)
Apart from his a capella from "Parenthood" and "Little Shop of Horrors", I haven't heard much musically from Mister Moranis. After hearing about and subsequently previewing his music CD, I have to recommend this more in the vein of Weird Al than William Shatner's "Has Been". Especially Moranis'"I Ain't Goin' Nowhere", a lil' tribute to Johnny Cash. Rick's singing voice is not forced, nor is it overprocessed, as in other celebrity efforts. Give it a whirl, and add this platter to your collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun to listen to country, January 4, 2007
By
This review is from: Agoraphobic Cowboy (Audio CD)
I'm not a big country music fan, but this is very listenable. Moranis does a good job of making the music enjoyable and witty. His song "Four More Beers" is a fun play on the political situation in the US.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rick Moranis sings Bluegrass?, March 19, 2006
This review is from: Agoraphobic Cowboy (Audio CD)
Not only is the music catchy but the lyrics have just the right amount of humor to keep a long car ride from getting boring. I admit to being surprised by the quality or Rick's voice. This is a fun and enjoyable CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligence in Lyrics, what a concept, February 9, 2006

This review is from: Agoraphobic Cowboy (Audio CD)
Rick is in rare form. He always had the gift for song even back during his SCTV days, no one did a better Merv Griffin parody. His songs are great and they get better every time you listen to them. This album really grows on you. I dare you not to be singing 'I never go no where' after listening to this album. Buy it and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rick Moranis is a good singer-- Who knew?, March 26, 2008
This review is from: Agoraphobic Cowboy (Audio CD)
I bought this CD after hearing clips on public radio. Now I can't stop listening to it. The music is pretty good, the lyrics are very clever and funny and catchy. But the thing that surprised me is Rick Moranis's deep and rich voice-- making this an excellent country album. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honey, I shrunk my stress, January 3, 2007
This review is from: Agoraphobic Cowboy (Audio CD)
Rick Moranis got my attention with this clever collection of songs. I listen to it repeatedly. Each time I listen, I catch something I missed before. It's very funny. I vote for 4 more beers, and I don't drink!

3.0 out of 5 stars I struggle with this album..., February 9, 2010
Because we all adore the canon of Rick's comedy work on the small and big screen, this is something altogether different. We, as fans, come to expect the same humor and delivery from our comedians, and so I look for some sort of linear progression, from SCTV to Little Shop to Spaceballs to his NYTimes pieces, etc....
But Agoraphobic Cowboy is a big departure. It's still funny, but the music is well....cowboy monotonous. I find the lyrics, as 'amateur cowboy poetry with a strong streak for sarcastic wit' pleasing, but the melodies and instrumentation to rake on my nerves. If you've heard three songs, you've heard them all, and then it' time to just read the lyrics booklet for the remainder of the album.
Rick, help us out! Where'a fan to go to figure you out??
