Editorial Reviews

Review

One of those sad but true facts of life in the 1990s: owning a piece of rural property--for farming, homesteading, or plain old recreating--can set you up for legal and business entanglements. The goal of Agreements [for Rural Landowners, Ranchers, Farmers, Homesteaders & Outfitters is to help you avoid potential pitfalls and disappointments via the use of comprehensive and user-friendly "fill-in-the-blank" contracts and forms. Topics of interest to recreational landowners include granting easements and trespass rights, leasing hunting rights, hiring contractors and consultants (to help you construct a pond or develop some other habitat, for example), harvesting wood and timber, and obtaining liability releases from people entering or using your land. Helpful instructions and suggestions accompany each set of forms. The author, an attorney with seventeen years of experience in the rural land arena, stresses the book is not meant to substitute for working with a qualified attorney. What this reference book really does is give you benchmarks for assessing the soundness of legal advice you might receive. -- Field & Stream, July, 1997

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Selection of forms - but for Attorneys, NOT laymen, January 13, 2002

This review is from: Agreements for Rural Landowners, Ranchers, Farmers, Homesteaders & Outfitters (Paperback)
I originally purchased this book to help me with some research into Agricultural Law, but the types of leases and agreements I was hoping to review (including agricultural leases, mineral leases, and real estate sales agreements) were specifically excluded. A fact which I discovered after purchasing the document.

However, of those documents that are available, it appears to give some good general forms. Each type of form has been given its own chapter. Each chapter contains (1) general and specific instructions; (2) a form of primary provisions, which will require the form user to fill in specifics; and (3) an attachment with general provisions (generic, possibly majority law).

As with all legal forms volumes, the casual user should be aware that these forms may not cover all legal issues. The author provides a general Disclaimer, which the reader MUST read. I would recommend that any non-lawyers who use this book, do what they can, but take the form and any necessary documentation to a lawyer. Your state's laws may require other information or documentation which is not provided in this book. That being said, this may be an excellent start to help you with your concerns as a landowner. Good luck.
