Book Description

Irwin Trader's Edge Series September 24, 1999
While futures and options trading drives the high-risk industries of agriculture and agribusiness, Agricultural Futures and Options is one of few books to address the workings of these fast-paced markets. In this comprehensive guide, industry leaders explain how to use these complex securities both to offset risk and speculate for profit. They describe different types of contracts, demonstrate how to trade in different markets, explain the interrelationship of global markets, and more.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Innovative hedging and profit strategies for the global agricultural risk market. While the basic principles of futures trading have remained virtually unchanged for nearly 150 years, their market fundamentals and trading practices have changed tremendously. Agricultural Futures and Options tells you how to reach your objectives in modern-day markets, and gives you a new understanding of the variety and complexity of today's vehicles. Chapters written by influential professionals provide strategies for both hedging and speculation, along with in-depth coverage of the structure and workings of the underlying agribusiness industry, including: methods to maximize your trading success in global markets from Chicago to London; advantages and drawbacks of the rapidly growing screen-based trading arena; action-based blueprints for each member in the F&O chain--from producer (farmer) to speculator (futures traders). Since it is impossible to know with certainty what agricultural prices will be in the near future, let Agricultural Futures and Options and its roster of top professionals explain how, as a producer, you can hedge the future value of your products--and how, as a speculator, you can profit from assuming that risk!

This review is from: Agricultural Futures and Options: Understanding and Implementing Trades on the North American and European Markets (Hardcover)
This book gives a great overview of the agricultural commodities markets of the world. It covers how the futures markets work, why they came into existence, and how they can be used to manage risk. The first six chapters are the most useful for the majority of readers; they focus mostly on the corn, soybeans, and wheat futures exchanges in the midwest United States. Several later chapters cover European exchanges and minor world exchanges. Don't expect to become a trader after reading this book, but it's a great place to get started learning about agricultural futures and options.
