probably his best studio album,
By A Customer
This review is from: Aguaplano (Audio CD)
First published in 1987 as a DOUBLE cd (please avoid the single-cd reprint, which omits half of the original record), 'Aguaplano' is arguably Paolo Conte's best studio work. Though stuffed with great songs (try for example the wonderful 'Appunti di viaggio'), many of Conte's previous albums could suffer from lack of production and unsatisfying arrangements: that's why most of his earlier material is generally best heard on his later live albums, such as the indispensables 'Concerti' and 'Max Live in Canada'. These are also, incidentally, the best way for newcomers to get acquaintance with Conte's work, the available best-ofs being more patchy and less convincing. Released at a time when Conte's qualities as a performer/arranger were getting stronger, and his qualities as a songwriter hadn't begun to fade yet, 'Aguaplano' is pure rapture from start to finish. Highly recommended.

Paolo Conte,

I decided to name this review simply "Paolo Conte". While this is partly because it's difficult to find the pith of an artistic work, it's also rather suitable: "Aguaplano" can be a great introductory album to Paolo Conte's unique approach or it can be a new addition for those who are already familiar with this gritty singer.
As in his previous and subsequent releases, the tunes on this album have a European feel, with touches of jazz and Latin American influences. A classic Paolo cocktail. "Aguaplano" also includes Paolo Conte's international hit, "Max" - doubtful minds will surely be resolved after hearing this familiar melody. Another reviewer mentioned that this is an album that will appeal even to those, like me, who don't understand Italian. They're right. Sometimes music is just interesting enough.
