Editorial Reviews

In 1959, Mingus arrived at Columbia-and arrived as one of the greatest composers and bandleaders in jazz. This 2-CD set captures his genius at that precious moment in jazz history as you hear Mingus Dynasty and its follow-up, Mingus Ah Um . Four bonus tracks and three alternate takes from the sessions join Mingus's instant classics Goodbye Pork Pie Hat; Better Git It in Your Soul , and Fables of Faubus inspired, inspirational, essential.

Hear the classic compositions of Mingus, one of the few great composers in jazz: "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", "Better Git Hit In Your Soul", "Song With Orange In It".
jazz lover since 1960
Most Mingus listeners will already have these two albums in their collection, but having both in one package, with great sound is hard to pass up.

Two discs 77 and 74 minutes each approximately. The sound is extraordinarily good, with open spaces between the instruments, which are crisp and clean. In addition,Mingus' voice can be heard very clearly (he sometimes shouts a bit when playing) in this music. The booklet has notes written by Michael Cuscuna. There is a track-by-track explanation, which gives much insight into this great music. Also included are quite a few nice photographs of the group in the studio. There is also a PDF file that can be accessed for more insight into this album.

This album, along with 1960's MINGUS DYNASTY (included here) is some of the best music Mingus ever released. The musicians who play here are some of the best jazz musicians in history. Names like John Handy,Booker Ervin,Jimmy Knepper,Dannie Richmond, and Roland Hanna make up most (but not all) of the group(s) for these two fine recordings.
Most Mingus listeners will already have these two albums in their collection, but having both in one package, with great sound is hard to pass up. For the uninitiated, this is jazz that belongs in your library, and should be your next purchase.

There are three bonus tracks appended to the 1959 release MINGUS AH UM-"Pedal Point Blues","GG Train",and "Girl of My Dreams". There are also three AH UM alternate tracks-"Bird Calls","Better Git It In Your Soul",and "Jelly Roll". The album MINGUS DYNASTY has one bonus track,"Srollin' (Nostalgia In Times Square)". This last track has a vocal by Honey Gordon, the daughter of one of Mingus' friends,Nat Gordon, who wrote lyrics for the piece.

Together, these two albums contain some of Mingus' most intricate and imaginatively scored parts for the various musicians.

This is a no-brainer 5 star recommendation. Many jazz lovers consider one or both to these recordings "Mingus Dynasty" or "Mingus Ah Um" to be among the great recordings of jazz history. I concur. You should get this "box set" instead of the individual recordings if you are at all interested in the music of Charles Mingus. It includes all the 1959 Columbia label material. Revel in the groove of what jazz is all about. Hear the classic compositions of Mingus, one of the few great composers in jazz: "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", "Better Git Hit In Your Soul", "Song With Orange In It". I could go on, but I want you to dig these classic recordings.

Mr. Jefferson very ably describes the contents of this dual album, so I will attempt to explain why each album on it is important.

The first, Ah Um, is one of the four albums that came out in 1959 that changed jazz forever. The other albums are Time Out, Kind Of Blue and The Shape Of Jazz To Come (US Release). Note that Davis' album went on the be the best selling jazz album of all time, and continues to enjoy brisk sales with no advertizing other than word of mouth, and Brubeck's received wide airplay on pop stations at the time and continues to do so, as well as continues to enjoy excellent sales too. Mingus and Coleman did not fare as well, but both influenced both jazz and popular musicians with the musical ideas expressed in these albums.

The other album in this set, Mingus Dynasty, was also issued in 1959 and the compositions and performances are similar to the Ah Um tracks to a large degree. However, both albums mark a maturation of one period of Mingus' work, because by 1964 he had evolved and took a different musical direction, which is evidenced by his work on the well documented European tour, and typified by the wonderful album titled Cornell 1964, which preceded the tour.

Back to this set. Most of the music has Mingus' trademark gospel/soul/shout elements.

I've never heard the standard non-50th release, but all in all this is a great jazz standard. I'd strongly suggest it as a first Mingus album, a cornerstone of any jazz collection.

I just wish to encourage those who are looking to purchase Mingus Ah Um, to pick up this Legacy edition while it is still available; it is certainly one of the best buys in my collection. For an almost embarrassingly reasonable price, you get not one but two albums, with the very fine Mingus Dynasty found on Disc Two. Furthermore, of the seven bonus tracks, only three are alternate takes...the other four representing some very fine material that did not make it on to the original albums. As for the music itself: if you are not familiar with the music of Charles Mingus, I can't imagine a better place to start than with this exceptional set of music. Enjoy!
