Magdalena Kozena: Love & Longing

Magdalena Kožená’s international career was securely established during her mid-twenties. The Czech mezzo-soprano, who won critical plaudits for her profound musicianship and beguiling artistry at an early age, signed an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon in 1999. Kožená has since matured to become one of the foremost singers of her ... Read more in Amazon's Magdalena Kozena Store

Editorial Reviews

This is Magdalena Koz ená s first collaboration with the
acclaimed Venice Baroque Orchestra and Andrea Marcon
a superlative grouping and a must-have album for every
Handel fan. Following her best-selling album Lamento,
Magdalena Koz ená returns to her musical home ground, the
world of dramatic Baroque singing, with her first Handel arias
album. Once again Koz ená has combined both well-known
and lesser-known works to create a personal anthology of
the most dramatic moments of love, hatred, hope, and
desperation. The program includes arias from Rinaldo, Giulio
Cesare, Alcina, and Joshua, among others. Handel s complex
characters and passionate writing are the perfect vehicles for
Koz ená s unique talent for delivering even the most
elaborate emotions through the sheer beauty of her singing.
The voice that goes straight to the heart (The Sunday
Times) takes listeners on an emotional odyssey.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it! September 28, 2008
Format:Audio CD
I guess that I am among those listeners who didn't mind the exagerated acting or diction exhibited in this fabulous recording! Perhaps I was so spellbound by the beauty of the music and Miss Kozena's fantastic voice that I didn't even noticed some of those exagerations. I simply loved this recording!

it's worth listening this CD of Handel's opera pieces. It rare for the major opera theatres to take these pieces.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning July 23, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Handelian opera lay dead for some two centuries before it was revived by singers like the Australian soprano Joan Sutherland and British mezzo Janet Baker. Both were marvelous singers who graced opera and concert stages for a generation. It was thought by many that there would be none of their caliber to follow, and Baroque singing might leave the stage with them. Now comes Magdalena Kozena from Czechoslovakia (today living in Britain as the domestic partner of the conductor Sir Simon Rattle). In this superb recording, she sings Handelian arias more powerfully than I have ever heard them.

Handel wrote many of these arias for the castrati then dominating the opera stage. As castrati no longer exist - some older men are castrated, surgically or chemically, as treatment for prostate cancer, but that has to be done before puberty to affect the voice, and anyone who perpetrated the act today would obviously be in jail - the roles can be played only by countertenors (men who have developed high falsetto voices) or mezzo sopranos like Kozena. On the stage, having women play characters like Julius Caesar, looks ridiculous, but on CDs it can work, provided the woman has a strong enough voice to portray a military hero. Few women have so strong a voice, but Kozena has it to spare. Her enormous vocal power, enhanced by the rhythmically electric Venice Baroque Orchestra under the direction of the Italian conductor (and organist, harpsichordist, musicologist) Andrea Marcon, results in simply magnificent performances. Anyone who thinks of Handel as the composer of only English oratorios like Messiah and Judas Maccabeus, has a revelation in store for them in this recording.

Highly recommended - but not as music to relax by. Listen to this late at night, and you may not get to sleep until dawn (which is exactly what Handel intended).

3.0 out of 5 stars Handel Exagerated November 30, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
There are beautiful arias on this disc, but they are spoiled by exageratedly slow tempi ("Scherza infida," for instance), exagerated "acting," and exagerated diction. I most of the Italian arias, Miss Kozena rolls her "Rs" in exagerated fashion ("Io trrradito in morrrte in brrraccio"), exagerates her "Ps." Her "acting" in the "Hercules" aria distorts the vocal line (this is also apparent in the "Agrippina," and "Orlando" arias), and causes her to make weird noises in the lower register - it almost seems she has no low notes. That said, Miss Kozena impresses in the rapid divisions and her commitment to the text is never in doubt. If the listener likes or doesn't mind the above, the album may delight.
