EXCITING, ANCIENT BERBER DANCES, MUSIC AND CELEBRATIONS,
By Lee Samelson (Vail, Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ahouach Argane: Tree of the Flying Goats (Audio CD)
The Berber are an ancient, remote people in North Africa doing well to continue their culture and way or life is the presence of the surrounding Arabs. Like many cultures, music is in fact an integral part of rituals and ceremonies. The type of music on this record is known as village music. This record may seem a little simplistic because the songs are indistinguishable and sound very much the same. But the remarkable thing is how the music seems to go straight through your body and move you right along with it. In fact, this music is preformed by dancers using the dance step known as the Ahouach. The Anouach ceremony is preformed for a few different agricultural of religious reasons. The lineup of sounds include flutes, hand drums, bells, handclaps and occasionally some type of high-pitched wails. Argane is a rare type of tree found in Morocco (there is also a music group of Berber heritage called Argan) in which goats climb to find tender green leaves. This tree, which one of the musical performances is named after is highly prized by the Berber tribes.
