Book Description

6 and up1 and upPirate School
While on watch in the crow’s nest, the pirate kids spot something gaining on their ship: a ghost ship! Rotten Tooth refuses to believe them, so the kids know that they have to solve this mystery themselves. They spend a night on deck waiting for the ghost ship to approach, and then they plan to board it. But is it even possible to step onto a ghost ship? And if it is, is it possible to get off of it?

More About the Author

I grew up outside of Philadelphia, a town I portrayed all my thoughts and feelings about in Pure Sunshine and the short story Filthadelphia. When I was eighteen, I moved to New York City where I stayed for ten years. You can read about my impressions of that city in both Tomorrow, Maybe and Thief. For the suburban experiences of my life, check out Perfect World and Dirty Liar.

Needless to say, ten years in Manhattan is more than enough. It was time to pack up and head for the peace and quiet of the middle of nowhere. Alas, I ended up in the Woodstock area of upstate New York. An area aptly portrayed in my book Zombie Blondes.

My fascination with writing started in childhood with the notion of making up stories. I loved action figures as a kid. Actually, I still do and still collect them. But as a child, I would set up my entire bedroom like the stage for one epic story that I would play out for days. I didn't know it at the time, but it was the basis for what I do now. I was also a stuffed animal kid. I had dozens and they all had names and they all personalities. Basically, they were characters. Writing isn't very different than playing. It's just a grown up way of doing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventurous!, January 25, 2009
This review is from: Ahoy, Ghost Ship Ahead! #2 (Pirate School) (Paperback)
The Pirate School Series really takes children on exciting adventures. I love how it takes a mostly "boy" topic- Pirates- and makes it exceptionally adventurous for girls too by including Vicky and Inna (2 of the Pirate School students).
Mysterious fiction books are very much enjoyed by 2nd and 3rd graders and Ahoy, Ghost Ship Ahead is a book that keeps the kids guessing the whole time as to why the mysterious Ghost Ship is lerking near their ship- the Sea Rat.
I really enjoyed reading how the Pirate School Students (Protagonists) kept overcoming the students' antagonist throughout the series, named Rotten Tooth. It teaches young readers that through teamwork they can overcome many real-life obstacles/challenges. Great book- can't wait to read the rest of the adventurous series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Calling all Crew!, December 5, 2008
This review is from: Ahoy, Ghost Ship Ahead! #2 (Pirate School) (Paperback)
After quickly reading through the first book in the series, The Curse of Snake Island #1 (Pirate School), my five year old and I made short work of this one as well. The enjoyment of finishing a chapter book with such great illustrations makes this another great installment in the series. Onto the next 'lesson' Attack on the High Seas! #3 (Pirate School).

5.0 out of 5 stars Another hit!, April 24, 2007
This review is from: Ahoy, Ghost Ship Ahead! #2 (Pirate School) (Paperback)
The second book in the Pirate School series is just as wonderful and creative as the first both in its story content and imaginative illustrations. Another "must have" for any child!
