Simple Story - sturdy materials,

I purchased this book because another reviewer had raved about it for her/his two year old. I thought this was an interesting idea for a book. However, my two year old was much too rough with the paper inserts used to change the story. The book should really be made of a sturdier material for small children. For children who might be a little more gentle (3 and over ??), the story may be too simple. The book only has about 5 sentences to the story. I would recommend a much better book by Nick Sharratt - Shark in the Park.

Cute, but not an Heirloom book,

I bought this book for my 3 1/2 year old son. The book is really cute and brightly illustrated....but it is not at all sturdy. The pieces are on light card stock that can easily get torn or bent when frustated little hands can't fit them into the provided slots. I also thought the "story" was very basic and easily written. The real novelty of the book is certainly the interchangable pieces that help change the story. If used with close adult supervision this can be a very good educational book. The printing on each of the pieces is very easy to read. I do suggest a Ziplock bag to gather the pieces for safe keeping.

Fun new genre for toddlers--"Change-the-story Books",

My 2 1/2 year old toddler recently received this book as a gift and loves playing with it. It's a great new concept that I rarely see demonstrated in a book--Press-out pieces whose tabs are color-coded and correspond to each page where the pieces best fit the story at that juncture. The book attempts to tackle reading/vocabulary and gross motor skills development (it takes some finesse to insert the tabs into the slots for the corresponding photo) at once, drawing upon technique from "Mad Libs" (fill in the blank), a puzzle, and grouping games (e.g., all yellow-tabbed pictures are found in the sea and, therefore, belong on the same page--easier to group and draw upon for matching). I rated it a "4" instead of a "5" because the story line could have been more robust, but otherwise, the book is a fun activity for both parents and toddlers.
