Book Description

5 and up
Lars, the little polar bear who lives at the North Pole, is off on a new adventure. This time he's been accidentally scooped up in a gigantic fishnet and is heading into port aboard a ship. How will he ever get home? Luckily, Lars isn't the only four-feeted creature on board. Nemo, the ship's cat, comes up with a plan to get Lars home that just might work.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

In Hans de Beer's Ahoy There, Little Polar Bear (now in a sturdy board-book format), Lars jumps in the sea to catch a fish, but it is he himself who gets caught in a giant net! Dumped into the hold of a ship with piles of slimy fish, he is taken away from his icy home in the North Pole. Up on the ship's deck, he meets the ship's cat Nemo, whom he asks to help him get home. They both creep ashore at the next port, to a town where Lars's white fur gets very dirty, and another cat arranges for him to hop aboard a ship heading back to the North Pole. Soon enough, the young cub is reunited with his loving parents. "Lars was happy to be home again, but often he sat and stared out to sea looking for ships--and ship's cats." While the story line is simple, de Beer's illustrations are quite endearing. Young children will be taken in by Lars's harmless adventuring and safe return home. 4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated, positive adventure stories for kids, October 5, 1999
By A Customer
Our friends from Germany sent Kleiner Eisbar (the German version) when our son was born. Then we discovered the books are available in English! This is just the first is a wonderful series that is not very well known in the U.S. Hans De Beers' illustrations are gorgeous and witty. The stories are simple, but entertaining, easy to read, and always leave you both inspired and feeling good at the end of each book. The Board Book is a great gift for new parents, and the large, hard cover editions are true keep sakes. We highly recommend the entire series-- You can't help but fall in love with Lars, the Little Polar Bear!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ahoy There, Little Polar Bear, August 21, 2000

Irene Drmla (Victoria,BC Canada) - See all my reviews
My daughter first discover Lars when someone gave her the video of the little polar bear (in german). For weeks/ months afterwards every second word was "Lars" (she was one at the time). Now on a recent trip to Germany I bought some of the books, so every night she wants to hear about Lars' adventures. Even though she has seen the video and heard the stories hundreds of time, she wants to hear them over and over again. And even though I have read them to her lots of times I'm still not bored with "Lars, the Little Polar Bear" and wont be for a very long time. The books are just that wonderful.
