More and more cuteness...
There's something about the lovely young ladies of Ai Yori Aoshi that tugs at the heart strings. Each has their own distinctive personality; so much so that they are basically graphic representations of literary archetypes themselves. The eighth volume of the series is pretty much more of the same that readers have come to expect of Kaoru's possible love...

THE HOUSE GETS BIGGER BY ONE
As sexual tensions increase between Aoi and Kaoru, their emotional intimacy does likewise. Kaoru finally opens up to her about his mother and the fact that he no longer knows whether his memories of her are reality or idealism. Kaoru's upcoming graduate school entrance exam is raising the anxiety level in the household, and all the girls seem to have their own special...

There's something about the lovely young ladies of Ai Yori Aoshi that tugs at the heart strings. Each has their own distinctive personality; so much so that they are basically graphic representations of literary archetypes themselves.
The eighth volume of the series is pretty much more of the same that readers have come to expect of Kaoru's possible love interests. Several stories revolve around Chika-chan's innocent infatuation (and her talent at extremely cute, chibi-plushies) and her eventual move to the mansion. There are also a few chapters dealing with Aoi and Kaoru exclusively. It was especially touching to see him subtly introduce Aoi to his Mother in a scene that has been played out just as well in other grand romantic series (Maison Ikkoku comes to mind). All in all, volume eight pleases in the various aspects it encompasses (cuteness, fanservice, romance, drama, comedy, etc.).

Kaoru finally opens up to her about his mother and the fact that he no longer knows whether his memories of her are reality or idealism. Kaoru's upcoming graduate school entrance exam is raising the anxiety level in the household, and all the girls seem to have their own special formula to give him good luck. Chika, Taeko's spunky cousin, shows up on the doorstep of the mansion and declares that she's moving in!
Ai Yori Aoshi is not a book to look for plot in. As I'm reading Volume 8 I sometimes question whether or not to continue the series. If it had outstanding characters, it would make up for the lack of events. I guess the reason why I keep reading is just the "mood" of the work. A mood which you could probably define as "sweetness and light". It's a love story and so it's more concerned with emotions and the displays of affection than leading the characters to revelations about the universe. But the lack of story progression in the past several volumes has led to a very repetitive manga. One that is still worth reading, at least, until you tire of it. I would also recommend the manga Aria, another manga more concerned with mood than storytelling. |
