Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 6-9-These titles describe the impact of two major contemporary problems from a broad societal perspective. In a thoughtful and balanced overview, Manning reports on the status of HIV/AIDS research, treatment, and issues surrounding the disease, and also traces its history. Efforts of governmental and voluntary agencies to educate the public, protect the rights of victims against discrimination, provide assistance in the face of contending priorities, and strains on the medical care system are discussed. Salak describes factors that may cause aggressive behavior: poverty, abuse, drugs (especially crack), the prevalence of guns, psychological despair in an unpromising environment, and the failure of the juvenile justice system. He contrasts public attitudes in the 1960s and `70s, when emphasis was on finding underlying causes and encouraging rehabilitation, with recent anti-crime concerns. He advocates preventive measures, urging society to "attack the source." These titles, despite their weighty topics, are unintimidating in format and easy to read. Black-and-white and full-color photographs appear throughout. For scope, there are no comparable works. Libby K. White, Schenectady County Public Library, NY
