Jet magazine called him "one of rhythm & blues most influential musicians." With a career spanning 40 years, Johnny "Guitar" Watson had success with blues, R&B and jazz. But his commercial and artistic apex came with his late 70s and early 80s funk recordings. Shout! Factory is proud to present three deluxe new editions of his classic funk albums Aint That A Bitch, A Real Mother For Ya and Funk Beyond The Call Of Duty as part of an ongoing series in 2005 and early 2006.
Previously Unreleased Bonus Tracks: 8. Funkula 9. Follow Me
After his hugely successful late-60s partnership with Larry Williams ("Mercy, Mercy, Mercy"), Watson had a few fallow years. But in 1976 he hit his stride with Aint That A Bitch, a potent combination of funk rhythms, jazz keyboards and stinging blues guitar. The album made the pop charts and reached #4 on the Black charts, spurred by the success of the single "Superman Lover," which has been sampled numerous times by hip-hop acts like Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, and Redman.

Funk Doesn't Get Much Better Then This,

This review is from: Ain't That a Bitch (Audio CD)
James Brown invented it,Sly,George Clinton and Bootsy embellished it and Chaka Khan BELTED it out but Johnny Guitar Watson made the funk all his own, starting with this 1976 album.Johhny sticks his ingenious blues guitar licks to this set of funk of R&B of his his creation. In fact outside of horns and drums he played all the instrumetns and very well too.Besides his songwriting on the jumpy opener "I Need It" is almost sing-a-long in quality while in the meantime "Superman Lover" and the title song are just plain classic grooves. The slower grooves are where the real meat has to be judged and on the well produced, keyboard laden 'ballads 'We're No Exception" and "Won't You Forgive Me Baby" Johnny passes the test with flying colors, proving he can more then deliver a complete album package. As for the bonus cuts?Lol THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALBUM CUTS AT LEAST!!!!"Funkula" is so powerfully funky and catchy it would surely become one of his classics and I could easily see an R&B radio station even spinning the likeminded instrumental "Follow Me".Whoever chose these fantastic bonus cuts knew what they were doing and I cannot wait for more Johnny Guitar Watson reissues in the coming months!
