Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Roger Miller was an uncategorizable talent who was best known for his hit songs "King of the Road" and "Dang Me".

To those that knew him, Roger Miller was a genius, whether referring to his unbelievable wit, or to his impressive songwriting. However, with the genius came a dark side. In the 1960s and 1970s he was notorious for walking off stage halfway through a show, getting into fights and going days without sleep. He struggled with depression and had a serious addiction to drugs, which cost him two marriages. Miller died at the age of 56 in 1992.

Ain’t Got No Cigarettes is Roger Miller’s extraordinary life as told by those that knew him best: more than sixty well-known musicians and entertainers including Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. A man who influenced some of the entertainment industry’s biggest stars, he was respected and loved by his peers.

From the Author

"When I become a die-hard fan of any artist, I try to get my hands on every song that artist ever recorded… The more I heard about him, the more I wanted to know. It seemed that Roger Miller was the music industry’s best-kept secret." - Lyle E Style

5.0 out of 5 stars You will laugh out loud!, July 5, 2006
By C. Robertson (Clarksville, TN United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a great book full of many people's memories of Roger Miller. I think the author was right to comment very little on each person's recollection; one's memories shouldn't be open for comment from someone who wasn't there. Mr. Style interviewed a WIDE range of people who had, at one time or another, a connection to Roger. The author really did his homework and it shows. This book is a must have not just for fans of Roger Miller, but for anyone who enjoys reading about the goings on in the music and entertainment industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first to cover Roger Miller's life!, March 17, 2006
It's surprising to note that despite his fame, AIN'T GOT NO CIGARETTES: MEMORIES OF MUSIC LEGEND ROGER MILLER is the first book to cover his life. Miller's rise to fame was sudden and sensational - unprecedented by any songwriter in Nashville in the 1960s - and his hits reached far beyond country audiences to involve mainstream listeners. AIN'T GOT NO CIGARETTES uses interviews from celebrities and everyday listeners alike to provide stories about the legend from his peers, friends, and fans. A powerful celebration of his life evolves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best All Round Music Book I've Read - TWO THUMBS UP, March 14, 2006
By Waylon Rules! (Las Vegas, NV) - See all my reviews
I'm a big fan of Waylon Jennings and picked it up because it was one of the last interviews Waylon gave. In the process I became a way bigger fan of Roger Miller. Previously I was only familiar with King of the Road and some of those hits from the sixties.

A movie needs to be made on Roger Miller, he was outragious and hugely talented. An interesting character study.

Despite another review I read here, I enjoyed the fact that it wasn't just focused on Roger. I mean if I was the guy who caught the last of the outlaw feud with Tompall and Waylon, I'd be an idiot not to include that in this book. Also, he explains out right that he kept things in there music fans would probably be interested in, if you're not interested, skip it! It's not going to make a difference to your enjoyment of the Roger stories. I don't think any of those stories were included to fill space, it's quite longer than the average book. I see them as a bonus!

After searching online, this is the only book on Roger Miller and I think it's a great one. It's not just for Miller fans by any means, it made me a Miller fan! I mean I liked him before but I didn't start looking for old albums of his until now. It's for fans of all kinds of music, not just country, and fans of the people that were interviewed in the book, it's stuff I've never read them talk about before.

If you liked the WALK THE LINE movie, you'll love this book. My Dad is reading it now and calls me almost everyday to share a laugh or story he liked from the book.

I thought the interviews were the perfect length and taught me a lot about a guy that hasn't been written or talked about as much as he should.

Well worth picking up the book, over three hundred pages of great stories on Roger Miller and the people interviewed.
