I can only say, buy this one!!! Every song is a highlight. Ponder is "bouncing around" playing whatever comes into his mind and he does it an a beatiful, beatiful way. His guitar is singing, it is singing from pure enjoy of playing those "happy blues grooves" John Hicks playing is also a delight to hear. What can beat this ???? I only hope that Ponder would become more wellknown, at least here in Europe, he is one of the best jazz guitar players of all times. Yes Sir!!

As I've said before - and as Anders below has said - (we seem to be the only ones hip to this Giant at this site), this man is simply the best, and the most underappreciated jazz guitar player in the world. Perhaps that will change. I sure hope so. I can tell you this for certain: Jimmy Ponder will never change his style of playing for "fame, glory, cash, or whatever". He will keep on keeping the flame of 'Wes-style' depth of chordal colors, and bouncing, popping, thumb-driven straight ahead jazz guitar as long as he can still play. He is not yet 60 years old, so it ain't over yet, by a long shot. The reason this only gets four stars is a selfish one. I've heard this man play clubs here every week, and I simply know the heights to which he can go. This is a great CD, as are most of Ponder's (check out "Alone" for solo 5-star playing), but the best is still yet to come. Watch out when it does!! In the meantime, this is GREAT. An aside: Ponder's newest CD, the above-mentioned 5-Star "Alone" is not to be found on either Ponder's CD list, nor through any 'search'. Go to this CD ("Ain't Misbehavin'"), and look for "Alone" listed above the 'listening samples' and click on it to get to it - it is worth the search. Pero, que pasa con ESA, Amazona??!!

Jimmy Ponder, a jazz guitarist from Pittsburgh, would be the first to tell you about the influence Wes Montgomery has had on his entire approach to music. "Ain't Misbehavin'" is one bluesy, swinging barroom album that would make his idol pleased. The ambiance on this recording is very intimate and casual, with Ponder displaying a style which is deceptively simplistic. One instantly gets the feeling of a live recording when listening to these tracks.

Incidentally, Jimmy Ponder is the leader on this album, not Don Braden. These tracks have been geared to revolve the most around the Ponder guitar work, not Don Braden on saxophone. Had Ponder chosen to take the quintet pathway as leader, that would have been his prerogative; yet "Ain't Misbehavin'" just ain't like that.

Here is the list of musicians playing with Jimmy Ponder on this dazzling venture: John Hicks (piano), Don Braden (tenor sax), Dwayne Dolphin (bass, piccolo bass/track 10 only) and Cecil Brooks III (drums). A solid album filled primarily with standards, Ponder and friends skillfully execute this five star album!

Nice guitar work here... but Don Braden fans watch out! The CD lists Don Braden, seemingly as part of this quintet, but he appears on all of TWO cuts! This is mentioned nowhere in the liner notes or the CD cover. It should say Don Braden appears on tracks 1 and 4. (Oh, I forgot, Braden plays 8 bars of the melody on Wave as well-- 3 out of 11 songs I guess). Can anyone say false advertising?! No offense Mr. Ponder, but Don Braden's got a bit of a following, and this situation just stinks.
