Within the last few month's, I have become a huge fan of Valerie Wilson Wesley. After reading her first Tamara Hayle mystery novel, I fell in love with her writing style and very graphic way in which she paints a picture of both her characters and the setting of which the characters are in.

Although this is her first "non-mystery" novel, I feel that it was excellent. It was a nice escape into the lives of Eva's (the main character) loved ones. Again, don't expect a Tamara Hayle mystery--especially if you have read more than one. Once you've entered the life of Tamara Hayle, you become fast friends with her.

Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do will allow you the opportunity to evaluate your own thoughts to such issues as: second marriages, loyalty to close friends, friendships with the opposite sex, dating outside of our generation, dating outside of our race, homosexuality, achieving dreams and goals, contentment as a single persone, relationships with grown children, and the limitations that we as individuals love ourselves and our families. The salient issue in this book, to me, was the influence of our parents and those who reared us on our true selves. A lot of who we are comes from our ancestry and lineage. DON' MISS THAT POINT.

I would definitely recommend this book. It is an easy read. You won't get bored with it. I would agree that it is somewhat predictable, but look for the true meaning behind the characters thought processes. It won't be as predictable as it may initially seem.

Kudos to Mrs. Wilson-Wesley for another quality novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent novel for the mature audience., December 13, 1999
This review is from: Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do (Hardcover)
I've never read any of Mrs. Wesley mystery novel. I normally read romance novels. The title and cover caught my eye one day while walking through a book store.

I really did enjoy this novel from cover to cover. Eva and Hutch went through a period of fall out of love. I think that alot of couples go through this sometimes but they must remember what it was about the person that they fell in love with at first and try to get that fire going again. I must say the only thing I didn't like about the book was the affair between Eva and Isaiah. The affair was good for Eva but mother and daughter shouldn't be involved with the same person. I think that Raye had a itch for Hutch all along. Raye took too much from Donald. I was glad when she finally woke up and left him. Donald was a true junk yard dog.

This book covered real issues that families face each day regarding love, hurt, decisions and friendship. Mrs. Wesley this is a well written novel. I wish you much success. For this to be your first romance novel you did an outstanding job. Be Blessed!

After ten years of marriage Hutch decides to walk out on his wife. The thrill is gone. Eva, his wife, alone and dejected begins to put her life back together again. Oh, and let us not forget their grown son and daughter whose issues with their parents and themselves further muddies the waters.

Thus begins the saga of a Black middle-class family torn apart by a love grown cold and their inability to find out what they truly want in life. Follow them on their journey to find fulfillment, reconciliation and renewal.

If you like predictable formula driven romances then this is the book for you. Many of the characters are so "wooden" in their presentation to the point of being superficial. As you enter into the world of their lives you ask the question, So what? The fact that you can predict the next step of the characters makes it a slow and boring read. Our author gets an average rating for this her first book foray into what can be called a romance novel.

Valerie Wilson Wesley is a far superior writer in her Tamara Hayle mystery series. This novel doesn't represent the depth and breadth of her outstanding skills. If she continues to write more in this genre then she will undoubtably get better. For now her attempt is just so-so.

4.0 out of 5 stars All In Her Business, December 30, 2001
Space sometimes is a wonderful thing in a relationship. It gives the two parties a chance to grow and a chance to realize how strong their love is for one another. Eva and Hutch learned this first hand. They learned more about themselves, their children, their family and friends during their time apart. - This was a very mature read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I appreciated Ms. Wesley's writing style, specifically the way she set up each chapter. Recommended read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Welcome Relief, July 25, 2000
By
This review is from: Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do (Hardcover)
I mean to cast no aspersion on the mystery writings of Valerie Wilson Westley, but this romance novel shows best the wide range of talent this author possesses. What a welcome change to read about a mature woman in a serious relationship and how she discovers herself when she is suddenly left by her husband. Though I found the book to be well-written, well-paced and interesting, it was the simple things that made me really embrace this novel. I liked the fact that: the characters had simple African American names like Eva, Roscoe and Steven; the leading female characters were 40 plus years old and were often described as good-looking, sexy and desirable; Eva got involved with a younger man when she felt he offered her what she needed and let him go when he no longer served her needs; Eva learned to enjoy being by herself more than she enjoyed being with a man; Eva didn't have a state of the art job with a far out title and a six figure salary; the author managed to write a thoughtful, mature story of love, sex, hurt and relationships using little profanity; the theme was basically pro-marriage. Yes. For my money or trip to the library, Ms. Wilson can stick to romance novels. Maybe she could write a love story about Tamara Hayle, but if she decides to go back to mysteries, well...ain't nobody's business if she does!

2.0 out of 5 stars Stick to mysterys, December 2, 1999

This review is from: Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do (Hardcover)
My book group read this book as our second book, we had heard wonderful reviews about your other books...but this one didn't do it for us. It started off great, but the characters in the book never really developed. What was the point of the opening of the story?and it seemed Ms. Wilson, was writing the characters to be "politically correct". Overall wait for it in paperback, if your looking for a good read I highly reccomend Ms. Wilson's other books, but this book is a drag, you'll have to force yourself through it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tried To Hard..., January 8, 2000
This review is from: Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do (Hardcover)
I am a fan of the author's mysteries and was very much looking forward to her debut romance novel. Ms. W-W holds onto her Xcellent writing skills, but I think she overloaded the storyline with TOO many issues. Although the characters depicted along with their issues were all "real", they were not explored totally in such a few pages, which took away from the book overall. Slow to start, which always on my nerves, but I plugged along because I love the author's previous works.

I am a huge fan of Valerie Wilson Wesley's Tamara Hayle mysteries and that's why I ran out to the bookstore to buy this book. After struggling through this book, I realized how much I missed her other books. The storyline was too predictable and it was slow getting to where you knew it was going. I knew the ending to this book after the first 2 chapters but it just seemed to drag on and on before it got there. My recommendation is for anyone who hasn't read her other books, read them and skip this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars It really ain't nobody's business that you did., February 11, 2000
This review is from: Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do (Hardcover)
I'm sorry Valerie but you slipped on this one girlfriend. I have read everything from the beginning of "Devil" to "No Hiding Place" and was terribly let down by this one. Maybe I missed the Tamara adventures and the relationship with Basil and her partner Jake; but I loved the way that they always found a place in the current episode of Tamara's life as would any true friend in a relationship. Ain't Nobody's Business was just too predictable. I didn't even have to finish it to know how it all turned out. My girlfriend and I are avid readers and she finished this one before me. Just to test myself I told her how the story ended and begged her to tell me if I hit the mark and I did. Not a good thing. Let's get back to Tamara and send her on another mystery. Stick to what works...I for one have missed her.

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointed, April 17, 2000
This review is from: Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do (Hardcover)
I bought this book when it first hit the book stands. To this day, I have not finished it. It was extremely slow and disappointing. It only takes me 1 day to read Valerie Wilson Wesley's novels. I may have stated that this was a good book if I wasn't familiar with the author's work, but because I am familiar with the writers material, it was very disappointing. I love Valerie Wilson Wesley's work. I periodically seach the web and the stores for upcoming books. After reading this book, I implore Ms. Wesley to please stick to mystery. She is wonderful at MYSTERY novels. She should not stray.
