Book Description

We’ve heard it all before: “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”
“Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
“When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.”

But anyone who has ever tried to make a big life change knows it can be a bit more complicated— and frightening—than that. How do you get up the nerve and confidence to actually take the leap? No one knows better than the women profiled in this powerful book by actress, activist, and bestselling author Marlo Thomas.

It Ain’t Over . . . Till It’s Over introduces us to sixty amazing women who are proving that it’s never too late to live out a dream—to launch a business, travel the world, get a PhD, indulge a creative impulse, make a family recipe famous, escape danger, find love, or fill a void in life with a challenging new experience. Meet a graphic artist who fulfilled a childhood ambition by going to med school at age forty-two; a suburban mom whose innovative snack recipe for her daughter’s lunchbox turned into a multimillion-dollar business; a private-practice psychiatrist who convinced her husband that they should quit their jobs and take off on an exciting, open-ended, cross-country adventure—in a giant bus, no less!; and a middle-aged English teacher who, devastated to discover that her husband was cheating on her, refused to be a victim, filed for divorce, and began the challenging journey of rebuilding her life.

Brimming with anecdotes that will inspire smiles, tears, and—most of all—hope, It Ain’t Over speaks to women of all ages with an empowering message: The best is yet to come!

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Although actor-author (Free to Be . . . You and Me, plus five others) Thomas has discovered 60 women who have changed their lives thanks to Thomas’ HuffPost-linked website, each story is a joy to read but also an inspiration. Thomas edits tales ranging from a philanthropist’s to a dance-studio owner’s, including cutting-edge careers, such as running canine boardinghouses. Real names, real facts are de rigueur; meet Jamie James, inventor of the Cellfolio; Robina, who opens a Curves Peligrosas store for curvy bathers in a Mexican resort; and Lee Gale, who discovered acting late . . . and is doing so at 71 years of age in Los Angeles. All stories are written in a warm third-person voice, each finishing with a you go, girl inspiration. Pick it up; start any chapter. Thomas has captured a marvelous way to jump-start dreams, at any age. --Barbara Jacobs

1.0 out of 5 stars Fine if you have money to start over April 20, 2014
By Sandra

yea, inspiring. BUT, almost every story is about a woman that had education, a high paying job, and money in the bank when they wanted to start over. And don't forget the supportive husbands and family. Write a book about the other women who have a soul sucking job that pays the bills and nothing else. I'm 59, recently divorced, had breast cancer, and other traumatic family events. Everything about me has changed, but I'm stuck. So thanks for the stories about going to college, flying here and there, starting your own business with your huge savings. All this book did was depress me even more.

"It Ain't Over" was a very easy read, with stories in short, easily-digestible chapters. For the most part, the stories in the book gave me a sense of positivity, as the women who were written about did overcome obstacles and achieve goals. What it seemed to lack for me personally were any stories about women of older middle-age (60s) and how they may have faced personal challenges later in life. Given the title, I thought there would have been more of an emphasis on that age group. I'm also skeptical about the outcome of the changes some of the women made -- have they continued down the new paths, are they now enjoying more happiness and personal fulfillment, or are the stories just a point-in-time without any insight into the long-term outcomes of the changes the women made.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable. May 7, 2014

This book was very inspiring. The only down side is that it seems like all of the women interviewed had access to funds to make their change, I do not have the option.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vignettes of Life Change and Determination... April 26, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a wonderful sharing of life reinvention. Although focused on stories of women reinventing
themselves and their lives, many husbands were involved in the process. It is a hopeful book
which offers a positive spin on using opportunity and ingenuity to live up to ones dreams and potentials.
What was of particular value to me was that the accounts included people of all ages, and socio-economic backgrounds.
Basically the theme is one of creation and determination. The true message is to embrace, rather than fear change and growth.
Once again Marlo Thomas has shared something life enriching with her followers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing May 7, 2014
By Kay
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Not at all what I thought it would be. It was touted as being something you could refer back to, but why? Stories were nice, people in the right place at the right time, yada yada. But seriously, they are featured in a book because their experiences are not mainstream or typical. If I lost my job today I would be a mess, and having the funds to just invent your 'second act' is not at everyone's disposal. As I read through (determined to finish the book only because I spent money on it), I started wondering what her criteria for selecting stories was. I picked up on a theme, but was seriously unimpressed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just like every other magazine article April 23, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
about finding yourself or inventing a business or... just a bigger collection. I looked for some cohesive element or thought or inspiration, but it's nothing new. Somewhat interesting, but not a how-to, just nice stories about women who found their dream job/hobby a little later in life. Marlo is apparently just the gatherer of tales.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected May 10, 2014

I thought this would be a book with advice from Marlo about different women's stories, but I found it wasn't what I expected. Check it out before you buy it so you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every woman over 40 should read this book April 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Whether you've had a successful career all along or left work once children were born, this book is a great read for any woman in midlife. Well written in clear language, this book is a collection of stories of women who did not let age stop them from leaving unsuitable situations and pursuing new vocations. Their tales are all both inspirational and instructional. I am recommending this book to all my friends.

Too much of the same all the way through. There is also no explanation of HOW these people accomplished what they did in starting over at an older age.

This was such an encouraging book to me as I am now a 65-year old woman. I was simply disappointed when I finally finished the last story because they were all so interesting.
