5.0 out of 5 stars A Spiritual Uplift
Reading "Aint't No River" was a beautiful love-learning experience that I will not forget. The novel is undoubtedly fiction; however, the spiritual insight is clearly based on scripture.

Reading "Aint't No River" was a beautiful love-learning experience that I will not forget. The novel is undoubtedly fiction; however, the spiritual insight is clearly based on scripture.

We spend our lives trying to climb the direction we perceive as up. "Ain't No River" reminds us about the real things in life that are important; God, family, friends, truth, and trust. Sharon Ewell Foster's newest novel inspires, touches and teachers. "Ain't No River" is beautifully written and reaffirms Ms. Foster's place among the literary elite.

4.0 out of 5 stars Redeeming, Uplifting, and Full of Fun, May 20, 2001
By
This review is from: Ain't No River (Paperback)
Ain't No River was my first venture into contemporary Christian fiction and author Sharon Ewell Foster has made me a believer in the genre. Rarely does a work of fiction feature so many well-developed, realistic characters. Author Sharon Ewell Foster has done this and seemingly with ease. The story features Garvin, a high-powered attorney from Washington D.C., who makes her way back home after being temporarily "laid off" from her firm. Home is a small town in North Carolina that seems a million miles away from the fast-paced world she knows. However, the attorney quickly sets down to business when she feels that her beloved 70-something Meemaw is running wild with proven ladies man, young GoGo Walker. A host of other well-developed characters add to the drama.

This uplifting story about redemption and remembering who we are is bound to bless any and all readers. However, readers will not feel that they are being preached to throughout the story. The method is much more subtle until perhaps the very end. Rarely does a work of fiction contain such a fine plot, such a wonderful host of characters, and so much fun. Foster's humor and sense of fun are unmistakable and would make the story one worth reading if other elements were not as strong. However, the author has integrated the finest elements of fiction along with this humor and has proven herself a voice to be reckoned with in contemporary fiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars inspiring and refreshing, April 20, 2001
This review is from: Ain't No River (Paperback)
I had a little difficulty getting through the first few chapters, but I'm glad I kept on. I found Garvin to be an annoying and frustrating character who overreacts to "problems" most people wouldn't even consider problems. She struck me as a whiny, spoiled city-girl, but I think Ms. Foster did a wonderful job portraying her character growth. The story is mainly Garvin's story, about her journey home and spiritual growth along the way. I found Meemaw, Garvin's grandmother, a delightful character that everyone can find inspiring. I really enjoyed watching the relationships between both Garvin and Meemaw and Garvin and Monique (a lonely child she is "mentoring") develop. Parts of the book are very predictable, and there seems to be so many climaxes in Garvin's character that one begins to wonder when, and if, she will ever really "see the light." Besides that, I felt it to be a really refreshing read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A stirring novel from an exciting new author., March 30, 2001
This review is from: Ain't No River (Paperback)
Ain't No River is another great novel by Sharon Ewell Foster.

Garvin Daniels is a successful D.C. lawyer who has rediscovered her faith but still has some problems when it comes to trust. Her devoted grandmother Meemaw is keeping company with a much younger man-about-town called GoGo. After winning a big case Garvin was given a ninety day administative leave due to allegations of being biased. Garvin heads to Jacks Creek after receiving an anonymous call to bring her grandmother back to her senses and chill out. Ain't No River is a well written good quality Chrisitan fiction that deals with trust, God, love, family and friends. God's Blessings to Sharon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reading!, March 20, 2001
By
This review is from: Ain't No River (Paperback)
Garvina Daniels was a D.C. attorney. After winning a big (and rich) case for her firm, Winkle and Straub, Garvin was forced into a ninety day administrative leave. No one would tell her anything except there had been allegations of Garvin being biased from the very client she had just won a huge case for! During her leave with pay, she was to prepare to litigate another case upon her return. She was expected to take all the files on the case and all the supplies she needed hoe with her. In fact, if she needed anything else from the office, she was to contact Jonee (one of her close friends) at the firm.

Garvin also was trying to help a young lady, Monique, get herself together for a decent future job. Sort of like a mentor. But Monique was a troubled soul that was in dire need of understanding. She no longer believed in anyone or anything. Neither knew that Monique had a few things to teach Garvin about herself!

Then there was Go-Go Walker. The man was a mystery to Garvina. Thinking he was after her Meemaw, Garvin kept her eye on him. Instead of proving him guilty of anything, she found herself falling in love, and giving Meemaw some new gray hairs!

***** Sharon Ewell Foster has a new fan in me! This one showed the blinders being pulled off of a woman who thought she was realistic! This is an author to watch closely in the future! Recommended reading!

3.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining book with a godly message!, January 9, 2002

However, Garvin is the one who is placed back on track when she returns home and finds out the real reason her grandmother is seeing Go-Go. You will enjoy this contemporary work of Christian fiction. The characters and dialogue are realistic and the storyline is interesting. Most important, however, is the message the authors conveys about the importance of living a godly life in ungodly times. A good read!

This reading was so enlighting to me, I wanted to let the whole world know. Ain't No River had become a guide line for me. I want to be a person that is ready to help others, and willing to atempt to see the right in others first, and not judge their wrong without trying to redeem the right that is in most people. Meemaw is a wonderful person. I want to govern my life to follow in her foot steps, because she is completely awesome!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a novel full of hope, faith and love., August 8, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Ain't No River (Paperback)
I am truly thankful that a 'true' Christian and believer has found a way to write a book without compromising. Ms. Foster's writing is so relative I couldn't wait to finish so that I could purchase her other novels. Her characters are people you know and situations you've actually experienced. Finally literature you won't be ashamed of reading while riding on the train to work.
