Although Pearl Bailey was born in the same year as Ella Fitzgerald, 1918, she never reached the same heights of acclaim. This was nothing to do with her formidable talent, it is just an example of the vagaries of the music business. Pearl got her first big break with Cab Calloway, then pursued a very successful solo career singing in clubs and cabaret. Her long-lasting marriage to drummer Louis Bellson was a rare mixed race example of its kind. This thoughtful JASMINE 23 track, 68 minute, compilation of commercial masters, including four sides with Hot Lips Page and the opener with Moms Mabley, exhibits all the warmth and humour expected of Pearl, plus examples of a deeper, sympathetic style. Although it was not Pearl Bailey's lot in life to be a huge commercial success in terms of record sales and international acclaim, like her peer Ella Fitzgerald, she was nevertheless a very classy singer with a large stage presence. Indeed, it would not be unfair to Ella to say Pearl had the greater personality, but whether by luck or ill health, Miss Bailey never quite achieved the dizzy heights of Miss Fitzgerald. One strange coincidence linked them: they were both born in Newport News, Virginia, in 1918 - Pearl on 29th March, Ella less than a month later.

Have several cd's and looking for more. Her voice and style are unique. She was a grand individual entertainer.
