Book Description

U. S. Air Force Special Ops is the inside story of one of America’s premier Special Forces, the warriors of the Air Force Special Operations Command.  These are the men who fly missions so dangerous no one else would dare.  They operate helicopters so close to the ground you can read their helmets.  Their gunships and special mission aircraft insert, supply, and support special forces.  They do what they have to, whatever the mission.  This book covers AFSOC from its early roots and operational history to today’s intense training program; from their arsenal of weapons and equipment to their sophisticated aircraft.

From the Back Cover

Before the U.S. Navy SEALs “fast-rope” in, a U.S. Air Force team of combat controllers is on the ground marking the area with infrared beacons. Before the U.S. Army Rangers execute and parachute on a drop zone, this team has been there for days conducting reconnaissance and surveillance and carrying out air traffic operations for follow-on forces.

These are the warriors of the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). With pararescuemen, combat controllers, and specialized fixed and rotary wing aircrews and aircraft AFSOC is perhaps America’s most diverse special operations force. They fly helicopters so close to the ground you can read the markings on their helmets. AFSOC’s gunships and special mission aircraft insert, supply, and support conventional and special operations forces of their armed forces brethren. Whatever mission they are charged with, they do it.

U.S. Air Force Special Ops is a rare inside look at a force that prizes its anonymity, the unsung heroes of countless covert operations critical to the security of their country. They are an air force with an attitude, and this is their story.

4.0 out of 5 stars a book that needed to be written for a long time, August 9, 2000

Although there have been many books written about US air force Ops very little has ever been written about the Combat control teams and para rescue components of this force. This book finally covers it in excellent detail. Also gives good coverage of the fly component of the air commandos, although some information is inconsitent, or dated, there has been very little of such good quality written about the Air Force special ops community. Great complement to the books that preceded it such as "From a Dark Sky" "That Others May Live" " Air Commando One" and "Any Time any Place"

4.0 out of 5 stars The most complete coverage of AF Special Ops to date, October 3, 2000

I have read every book on Air Force Special Ops, and by far this is the most current and illistrative. While the photos may be staged, considering the secret nature of Special Ops, real-time photos may not even exsist, let alone be de-classified: they are very illistative of many aspects of operations. There are so many books about SEALS, Special Forces, Rangers, etc. and AF SpecOps is so overlooked, it is about time they get some equal time. This book is the best I have seen, to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book to buy for info on USAF special operations, October 6, 2000

Finally a book on everything about PJ's and CCT from their extensive training, the pipeline, to future mission profiles. Better, more in-depth info than I have ever found on the net. But this is just half of this book. If your looking for info about the planes, helos, jets and their capabilities this is the book you're looking for
