SKATING ON THIN ICE

Without a doubt, Ikki is the most fearsome skater around. Too bad he’s lost the super high-tech skates that helped him succeed. Worse yet, Ikki’s a far better skater than he is a student. He’s failing in class and must clean up his act fast in order to compete in the next Parts War–a dangerous and thrilling face-off between rival skate gangs. As the team leader, Ikki knows his friends are counting on him. Everybody thinks that he’s the toughest kid in school, but is Ikki about to prove them wrong?

Includes in-depth translation notes, character concept sketches, and a preview of the next volume!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good action, bad toilet humor, June 5, 2007
This review is from: Air Gear, Vol. 4 (Paperback)
First thing first, this is not a review of the entire series, just this portion of the manga. There are no summaries in this review.

The main appeal of this manga is that it is action packed-fast paced that I have been missing from other manga. This series seems to be the only manga out there that has action in it, but is not based on a cop or a ninja. Volume one is great, buy it, the specifications for these skates rival some of the specs found in the Gundam Seed Destiny and Eva mangas. Volume 2 goes more into the back story of the culture of the Storm Riders (decals, parts wars, how to pimp your skates...etc.) You also see a lot of a mysterious hottie (Simica), who appears to be an ally to Ikki.

The third one enters about Ikki's school life and there is a battle for parts in the school. His rivals learn to respect "his natual skill" or dumb luck...whatever.

Now for this volume. Most of it is BS. Honestly, it is the manga equivalent to the Super Saiya-jin Man saga in DBZ. There is so much fanservice in this book it became distracting from the story. There is a scene with a teacher that has a panty flash every page. If that is not enough, there is an entire panel of our hero, stripped naked (blurred for our own protection) taking a dump....out on a building rooftop. Now if you are into that kinda thing and think it is funny, then good for you, but to a girl like me, it was gross (And not the cool gross in urotsukidoji, but gross as in somebody taking a s**t in an alley).

That scene alone may turn me away from this manga (or just wait until it gets cheap on EBay). I am still trying to get that image out of my head. Anyway's this volume was such a let down for me. Stick to the stylish action packed art work, instead of the toilet humor.
