Now it's time to start practicing. You'll want to encourage kids to get familiar with the controls before they engage in a big-time air battle, since flying these choppers well takes practice. In addition to an on-off switch and a switch that lets you select the correct channel to control your helicopter, each hand-held controller has a throttle stick, a rudder stick, a button to adjust for trimming, and two thumb buttons for firing your infrared "guns."
We found the best way to start off was flying one helicopter at a time in a large, indoor space, while focusing simply on hovering an even distance above the ground. This simple task is trickier to master than you might imagine, but with enough practice it becomes second nature. The included instruction manual and Havoc Heli Laser Battle DVD offer lots of tips for learning to fly, from focusing on the helicopter instead of the controller to applying very gentle pressure on the control sticks.
Fun, Imaginative Play for Expert Pilots
Once two players have learned the basics of flight, you're ready for battle. The included Air Hogs mini comic provides battle strategies, along with suggestions for adding intrigue to your laser battles. Kids and adults alike are sure to enjoy the first time they score a big hit on an opponent and see his chopper spin out of control.
Younger children may end up disappointed with the learning curve associated with these helicopters, since their friends will have to practice before they can play together. That makes these a good bet for siblings or neighbors who play together often, since they can master flight simultaneously.
Additionally, these helicopters offer an excellent opportunity for parents and kids to play together, offering each other flight tips and competing on equal ground. You may find yourself having even more fun than your children with these remote-control choppers.
Overall, this battle set is a great way to teach patience, persistence, and principles of flight, all while having a great time. Our one real concern is the durability of the helicopters themselves. While Air Hogs thoughtfully includes extra tail rotors, and our helicopters survived lots of brutal crashes while we were learning to fly, they are made of foam and lightweight plastic. This means that any chopper that gets stepped on or tossed around is almost sure to sustain some damage.
What's in the Box
Two helicopters, two controllers, DVD with battle and flight tips, four spare tail rotors, rotor removal tool, aluminum labels, mini comic book, and an instruction manual.

This review is from: Air Hogs Battling Havoc Heli - Havoc vs Yellow Stinger (Toy)
Got this Christmas morning as a present to myself mostly but everyone in the family had a blast... while they lasted.
Amazon recommended that I also buy replacement rotors with this at checkout. Be warned that the top rotors CANNOT be replaced! Spinmaster (which these are) Havoc Heli rotors are fixed to their shaft. There is no documentation or warning about this. The instructions make no mention of ever needing to replace the top rotor. Luckily they were only a few extra dollars. After about 5 hours of use, the shaft for the rotors that propel the heli upwards came lose from the motor and there is no way to reconnect them. We had a fair amount of crashes into walls, but no serious abuse. Both helicopters failed in the same battery charge. Next time I will buy a heli that I can replace parts for. Even though these ones broke, it was still a blast while they worked and I would like to fly again.

Having owned Air Hogs products before, we bought the Battling Havoc Helis knowing how delicate the actual toy would be and how much practice is required for flying one with skill/precision.
That said, we are having a blast with our helicopters. We have a small living/dining area and it is a battleground for air hog laser tag. The units charge rather quickly (especially compared to the Air Hogs jet we own) and they provide 5-6 minutes flying time with each charge. For the most part, we are two adults playing with them and we have only successfully "shot" each other a few times over two days of play so we still have a lot of practicing to do. We have 6 and 7 year old children who also like to participate in the fun, and they are able to fly the helicopters around the room. Shooting or really steering their machines is a bit much for their ages. This is definitely a teen/adult toy, but the entertainment is enjoyed by all. Make sure to read the instructions/watch the DVD--especially if you are new to Air Hogs products to optimize the fun.

I bought this set as a birthday present for my 14 year old godson. I expected that it would be fun for awhile, but had no expectation that this product would work as advertised. These things rarely do. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this was a lot of fun to fly and that the battles were great! We had about 10 minutes of flying time per charge, but that seemed pretty reasonable. Of course, this was with a couple of adults playing with a teenager. I think this could be frustrating for a younger child with a shorter attention span. But for an older kid (or adult "kids") this was an absolute blast. Well worth the price. The helicopters were surprisingly durable considering that we crashed them into ceilings, floors, a cat, a water dish an into an enclosed ceiling (it takes awhile to learn to control these things). With practice we were able to maneuver them pretty well, and I was surprised at how well these helicopters could be controlled. In all of that, only one tail rotor suffered any damage, and that was quickly fixed with the spares supplied with the set.
Overall, for the right people, these are a lot of fun. It takes some patience and a pretty good sense of humor to play well with these, so that should be a consideration. But I'd buy these again, and I'll certainly consider buying a different product in the same line.
