Product Description

Editorial Review

The lightweight, plastic propellers and a charcoal-and-silver foam body on this spy copter don't make it very sturdy, but it has an arsenal of "high performance specs" that should balance vulnerability with greater agility. A few of them include altitude and rotor speed indicators, a "flight stabilizing" system, and proportion control, all of which help lift up to 50 feet. Those features are considerate, but kids won't even care about those doodads once their bird takes flight. Of course, it's not very large (more like a grasshopper than a spy copter) but has lots of fun is packed into it. Plus, its quick-charging station doubles as a cool launch pad, complete with an input jack shaped like a fuel nozzle. Included: instructional video. Required, eight "C" batteries for launch pad; six "AA" batteries for remote control. Diane Beall

Product Description

Able to launch straight up to heights over 50', hover in place, accelerate and brake, this Air Hogs helicopter moves just like a real chopper—all by radio control. It's easy to pilot and land with proportional control. Just hit the throttle, and the harder you press it, the higher the heli will go. A rear rotor stabilizing system steadies the helicopter in the air, while crash-resistant EPP foam construction prevents it from being damaged. Comes ready to fly with a controller, learn-to-fly video and a launch pad that doubles as a charger. Also available in red (sold separately), an identical model controlled on a different radio frequency for simultaneous racing or flying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Toy, Flys, Crashes, doesn't break!, January 16, 2004

This review is from: Air Hogs Sky Patrol R/C Black Helicopter - 27.195 MHz (Toy)
I bought this R/C helicopter for my 5 y.o daughter. She was initially afraid to fly it because she thought it would crash and break. I flew it, and it soared, stayed up at least 5-10 mins, and then I crashed into a tree. It was intact and we relaunched. My daughter took the controls and it flew, but then she let it drop from 40 feet onto the pavement. It remained unscathed. We have flown it at least 15 times. It is easy to fly although has limited steering ability. Adult supervision is a must. An onlooker, who turned out to be a helicopter pilot, was amazed that this toy could develop enough thrust to lift off at the speed and to the height that it did!
Its a winner--make sure to assemble with the tape in place on the body.

Bought this for my son's seventh birthday. He and his 5 yr old brother looked forward to the weekend, so we could take it out to fly. We loaded the batteries, charged it up, and then nothing. It wouldn't go up 10 inches. My son called it a "dud". This isn't the first Air Hog radio controlled vehicle he's received; he received an airplane (the purple one) last year and it's never worked; but this will be the last one I purchase, and if he should receive any as gifts, I'll return immediately instead of having to deal with the disappointment.

4.0 out of 5 stars I bought two!, August 20, 2003

I think that this is a great toy! I bought one last year and had a great time with it. It was a little hard to control at first, but after a couple of tries, I had it down pat. I can fly it in front of my house with little trouble. It EASILY climbs to 40-50 feet. While you will never be able to do acrobatic manuevering, you can make it fly in the general direction you want it to by easing off the throttle until the body rotates where you want it. It dosen't fly long on a single charge, but it is long enough to have fun with it. I have two, now, and will change the crystal oscillator in one so they can fly at the same time. I let a nephew fly it in my yard once (BIG mistake!), and he landed it on the chain link fence. The main rotor "guard" broke and refuses to be glued back. It flies, but with a vibration that is dependent on rotor speed. There appears to be resonance (peak vibration) at middle throttle power. I'm considering removing the "guard" altogether, but I'm worried about rotor balance. For the time being, I've drilled a hole through the broken pieces and attached them with a metal pin (stick pin). It works pretty good, but the pin sticks out a little, and at a couple hundred RPM, it could rip a nice chunk of skin out of someone if I crash into someone. Anyway, TMI. I love this toy!
