1.0 out of 5 stars Dud
Bought this for my son's seventh birthday. He and his 5 yr old brother looked forward to the weekend, so we could take it out to fly. We loaded the batteries, charged it up, and then nothing. It wouldn't go up 10 inches. My son called it a "dud". This isn't the first Air Hog radio controlled vehicle he's received; he received an airplane (the purple one) last year...

I flew it, and it soared, stayed up at least 5-10 mins, and then I crashed into a tree. It was intact and we relaunched. My daughter took the controls and it flew, but then she let it drop from 40 feet onto the pavement. It remained unscathed. We have flown it at least 15 times. It is easy to fly although has limited steering ability. Adult supervision is a must. An onlooker, who turned out to be a helicopter pilot, was amazed that this toy could develop enough thrust to lift off at the speed and to the height that it did!
Its a winner--make sure to assemble with the tape in place on the body.

It wouldn't go up 10 inches. My son called it a "dud". This isn't the first Air Hog radio controlled vehicle he's received; he received an airplane (the purple one) last year and it's never worked; but this will be the last one I purchase, and if he should receive any as gifts, I'll return immediately instead of having to deal with the disappointment.

4.0 out of 5 stars I bought two!, August 20, 2003

I think that this is a great toy! I bought one last year and had a great time with it. It was a little hard to control at first, but after a couple of tries, I had it down pat. I can fly it in front of my house with little trouble. It EASILY climbs to 40-50 feet. While you will never be able to do acrobatic manuevering, you can make it fly in the general direction you want it to by easing off the throttle until the body rotates where you want it. It dosen't fly long on a single charge, but it is long enough to have fun with it. I have two, now, and will change the crystal oscillator in one so they can fly at the same time. I let a nephew fly it in my yard once (BIG mistake!), and he landed it on the chain link fence. The main rotor "guard" broke and refuses to be glued back. It flies, but with a vibration that is dependent on rotor speed. There appears to be resonance (peak vibration) at middle throttle power. I'm considering removing the "guard" altogether, but I'm worried about rotor balance. For the time being, I've drilled a hole through the broken pieces and attached them with a metal pin (stick pin). It works pretty good, but the pin sticks out a little, and at a couple hundred RPM, it could rip a nice chunk of skin out of someone if I crash into someone. Anyway, TMI. I love this toy!

I bought the Black Resistor airplane from Air Hogs. The only bad thing is it flies for about 30 seconds and it crashes, with not that much height at all. Then I bought the Air Hogs Helicopter with hesitation. I didn't know if it would only fly for a second or so. But that wasn't the case. Make sure to charge it twice before you start flying your first flight for the day and you will have a blast. Controlling it can be a bit tricky but overall this toy is sooo much fun. I crashed into trees and a fence and it still flies. Don't buy the airplane but buy this helicopter. Make sure there is no wind or the whole time it will fly in that direction no matter which way you turn it.

I recieved an R/C Plane by SpinMaster for my 4yr old as a present. Needless to say he couldn't get the hang of launching and then controlling it. It really wasn't in his age range to begin with. At any rate his plane broke, and I bought him this helicopter instead.. It's great.. With a 4yr old, not having directional control with this thing is actually a good thing. You can't really expect to get a fully functional RC helicopter for $50.. More like $300. It does take a lot of batteries.. I would reccomend investing in some rechargable batteries, or a disposable battery recharger.. On engergizer batteries I get 20-25 flights before I have to recharge or replace them. The helicopter takes three minutes to charge, typically stays in flight 1-2 minutes.. When you think about a regular electric r/c car, plane, or helicopter, it takes 4-6 hours to charge those batteries and you only get 10-20 minutes.. You do have to let it rest every 5 flights or so because it will overheat from charging and discharging the batteries repeatedly.. There is a heat sensor inside the helicopter that will automatically cut it off when it gets too hot so you don't damage the batteries. This helicopter is very durable, we've dropped it from over 60ft and it's hit everything from soft grass to pavement and the only damage has been a couple of scratches on the bottom and in the styrofoam body.. I've landed it in trees, hit telephone poles, power lines, and run it full speed into a house and it doesn't miss a beat. You can get a pretty easy landing if you just slowly ease off the throttle.. It will slowly descend.. Making this thing hover rather than going as high as possible is fun also.. Wind is a MAJOR factor in flying this thing.. I've had it go as far as a quarter mile away in gusty conditions.. The other thing is that when the wind is blowing it won't go quite as high.. Best thing to do is position it to launch on the side of the field that the wind is blowing from so the wind is working for you to carry it in the right direction rather than against you.. When in doubt what it's over, just ease off of it and let it come down a bit.

SpinMaster has good customer service, after a round of batteries or two (40 or so flights?), the charging base stopped working.. They're shipping one out to me no questions asked!

For under $50 this is an excellent r/c toy for ages 4-40. I'm 24 and I have just as much fun with it as my 4yr old. (ok, maybe more!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Really Cool, December 2, 2003

I first saw this toy in an add and even my dad thought it would be cool. So I rushed to the store to get it. I charged the chopper and rushed outside to fly it. I was amazed at the power the little chopper had. Lift off! I was excited and amazed again at the fact that this little toy was in the air, hovering like a real chopper! It was a little windy and my chopper really took off because its so light. It flew way higher than box said it would. It was awesome, and surprisingly easy to land. I love this toy. The only downside is that you cant totally control the direction it flies and it doesnt fly very long on a single charge. This was my first rc chopper, and after flying this one, i cant wait to get a real model chopper, one that i have maximum control!

it does exactly what it says it does. it flies up and that's it. fun to see how far you can let it fall before recovering. also fun when it doesn't and hits the dirt from 30 ft. up. this heli is very durable(because the body is all foam). I don't however, have 8 D batteries just laying around for the charger, so i've had to scavenge and have never charged it with all new batteries. so now i'm not sure if the batteries in the charger are the problem or if the onboard battery is the problem. because i havent been able to get it off the ground for a while. if you can get it cheap, thats good, but if you don't live to fly then full price is not your cup of tea. i hope someone reads this.

I got this Item as a gift and at first was skeptical about flying it because the box indicated that it "flies straight up". I thought that was all it would do, but when I tried it I found that although there is no "left-right control" it could still be maneuvered fairly well as the directions inside stated. I could not believe the height it was able to reach as well, it was nearly a speck in the sky and I brought it down fearing a wind would take it away. It also seems very durable. On more than a few occasions it smacked into trees, my house and other items in the yard and there was no damage to the chopper. I also crashed to the ground from at least 15 feet and it was able to get right back up. You definitely need a calm day and a lot of space for this toy because it does wander in the breeze, but I was very surprised at how much fun this chopper is.

Good: It flys high, and durable
Bad: Use 8D plus 6AA batteries
You cannot control the heli
Takes 5 mins to charge, but fly only 1 min.

Summary: It's a toy for a little kid. My 2 years old boy love it. It needs to fly on a big grass field since you don't have control of it at all.

This is really an awsome toy!!! It is designed to be durable and easy to control in a non-windy day. I have been flying this helicopter for more than 30 rounds. The launch pad is almost not necessary for launching. I found it is easier just grab the air hog over my head and start the engine. You have to be an adult to do this and be very careful to have the maximum throttle. It just sours with your pushing the button! It is designed to cycle in the air.
By the way, don't go as high as possible! The higher you go, the easier you lose your air hog! 20 feet is reasonable. When you see that you are about to fly out of your scope, just push forward button to stop the engine rather than trying to control it. Good luck!
