5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent third series of Stargate
As a fan of the other two Stargate series, I have found SGU, both season 1 and 2, to be an excellent addition. It is a bit darker and more emotionally complex than the other series. I found this to be a plus because it differentiates it from the other two. It has a new perspective, setting, and characters, but still references and has appearances of the other Stargate...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent third series of Stargate, May 8, 2011
This review is from: Stargate Universe Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
As a fan of the other two Stargate series, I have found SGU, both season 1 and 2, to be an excellent addition. It is a bit darker and more emotionally complex than the other series. I found this to be a plus because it differentiates it from the other two. It has a new perspective, setting, and characters, but still references and has appearances of the other Stargate series to tie it in. If you are a Stargate fan, or a fan of sci-fi, space shows, drama, or just want to check out something new, I highly recommend watching the SGU series.

I'm a long time Stargate fan. This one is different, darker, more dramatic... but it is friggin awesome! Had a slow start, but kicked into gear the second season! Truly fantastic

5.0 out of 5 stars A Grown Up Stargate, December 26, 2010
This review is from: Stargate Universe Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
This series is a one of a kind show with spectacular graphics. It's more grown up than the 2 Series before it, and brings the Stargate Lore to the forefront. The show gets better and better up until the end, and leaves you on the edge of your seat wanting more. I recommend this to any Stargate fan!

3.0 out of 5 stars Had Potential..., October 9, 2009
This review is from: Stargate Universe Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
This two-part inaugural episode of Stargate Universe (SGU) was a very good opener for what I had hope would be another long running Stargate series. While I found the opening pace a bit too forced (but necessary to get things moving along), the episode wasted no time before beginning the action. There are also a lot of very good computer generated graphics that are to the standards set in the original Stargate SG-1: The Complete Series Collection and Stargate Atlantis: The Complete Series Collection (another series canceled too soon).

The main characters are a mixed assortment of soldiers and civilians (including scientists, IOA officials, politicians, etc) that no one would have selected to work together for a long duration mission, unfortunately for them (fortunately for us) they are thrown together through events that take place in the first episode. The main characters, a scientist with dubious motives for his actions, a computer nerd, a young Lieutenant, and a senator's daughter, are all very strong and there is a lot potential for great drama.

This show had a lot of potential but gave up on it fairly quickly!

Highly Recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Start, Not Sold Yet, October 21, 2009

I just finished watching this. Its nice to have the VOD version as there are no ads. I haven't read any other reviews yet.

I knew a little about the show from a co-worker. I knew it was dark and I understood about the ship.

I love the way the did this episode with flashes back to the history of the different characters as the current events are happening. My first question of why they would send people through if they didn't know where it lead to was covered.

I like Eli. I am not sure how I feel about the others. Honestly, I can't recall their names.

The episode kept my attention the entire time, which is a good thing. I did not feel the urge to check my BlackBerry or fast forward. However at the end, I wasn't sold on the show yet, but I did want to watch the next episode to see what happens.

5.0 out of 5 stars A promising start..., October 6, 2009

The pilot episode has paved the way towards another successful Stargate series. I was impressed with both the cast and the apparent storyline.

1.0 out of 5 stars Desperate Housewives Galactica, January 18, 2010
This review is from: Stargate Universe Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
This review is in regard to the series as a whole, not this particular episode.

I want to like it, I really do. My wife and I have been huge fans of the Stargate franchise since the 1st episode of SG1, and through the latter, lamer days of Atlantis.

I normally would post a long, informative review with a sufficient amount information to help others get a good idea of what the high and low points of the show are. However, all things being relative (to the previous Stargate series), I liken this show to a public restroom. If trying to explain to a person the less desirable points of a public restroom, and given that the listener has visited one on even a single occasion, one does not need to supply an abundance of supporting evidence as to why others should steer clear, nor does the "character or nature" of the public restroom warrant such attention or justification. But still, a couple of short observations

I'm not saying that the show has NO good points at all, but relative to other Sci-fi programs, it really doesn't. A couple of short observations for those still considering wasting that $1.99.

1. A dark, sappy, self indulging soap opera containing constant social cliches and political commentaries, that merely takes place on a space ship, is not science-fiction.

2. The act of casting a show with almost entirely unlikeable characters, numerous plot-holes, and entire episodes that are dedicated to occupying time while the writers devise ways to further the plot in subsequent episodes, is not redeemed by the fact that it takes place on a space ship.

3. A cast of morally ambiguous characters, having sex constantly with everything but the ZPM, on a space ship, is not science fiction. It's certainly not Stargate.

The show is a cross between Desperate Housewives and Battlestar Galactica, minus the sci-fi and action elements of Battlestar Galactica, and with the drawn out lack of plot development found in the middle seasons of Lost. The sheer volume of sex, drama, whiney/conflicted/angry characters and plot holes, coupled with the lazy writing and reliance on cheap gags like lesbian love scenes, and the token angry black man is mentally exhausting.

If you want drama, sex, social commentary or sci-fi lite, there are other series that accomplish that task without claiming to be something they are not. Let's not forget that this is a SciFi (SyFy) channel series.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Sci Fi show ever, January 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Stargate Universe Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
Why did they have to ruin a good thing. I wish they could have sticked to the Atlantis story line. This is a poor drama filled excuse of a show. If I wanted to see this much drama I would watch a soap opera. I want to see them explore the universe and meat fascinating alien cultures and new technologies. I don't want to see them complain for an entire hour about their unimportant problems. It makes me sad to see that they ruined Stargate.

1.0 out of 5 stars CANCELED YET?, February 11, 2010
This review is from: Stargate Universe Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
This is another horrible incarnation of Stargate SG1. This is some ones rewrite of Battlestar Galactica. No ethics or morals showing up anywhere. Can we say CANCELED. Stargate SG1 we are sorry.
